Citizens and video watchers arise!

New Zealanders have long suffered due to a lack of legitimate online video options. Alert readers will recall that we have looked at these issues in a blog post (The ins and outs of online video), and the next step is to get some better data on how our options compare with more fortunatate isles.

We want to do this by creating a list of legitimate online video options and their key characteristics. If you are a user of online video options willing to share your knowledge with the world, feel free to contribute what you know, or correct what is there in this spreadsheet.

We also want to gather information on how New Zealand compares. So if you are using the US iTunes, Hulu, Netflix, Lovefilm or some other major online international video service, please fill in the sheet that explains how it stacks up. We promise not to tell anyone if you are breaching their terms and conditions.

With your contributions the idea is that this table can become a trusted source of information, and TUANZ and others can use it in their ongoing lobbying on these issues.

You can also get involved in the conversation on the TUANZ website (when I get the post up) or here on this Geekzone thread. Thanks Mauricio.

Thanks. Love your work.

Already some edits going on. Many thanks for your time and effort, folks.

Really appreciate it.

Once we get some good data on what's available we can compare/contrast with the international experience and then see where to from here.

cheers

I won't add this now as I am getting out, but you might want to reconcile my blog post legal video, movie and TV download and streaming options in New Zealand with that spreadsheet. I will later try to update the blog post with anything new from there.

That would be great - add that in if you want...

Good international content there, but crumbs, New Zealand is looking pretty thin on the ground.

Helpful if sources could be added also - just enough info to find source data using google e.g. sandvine, akamai report, netflix site, gigaom etc.

Oh and date will become important as this gets a bit older.

Wow, if you don't want to use a VPN/foreign credit card your options are next to nothing for TV/movies.

I inadvertently discovered that using TOR or Orbot gives you access to international content from the Google Play store - however it's luck of the draw as to what country your exit node is in. So far I've managed USA, France and Germany. Have plugged what little info I've been able to glean into the spreadsheet.

"You are" = "You're" - Not "Your".  "They are" = "They're" - Not "Their" or "There".  You probably mean "lose" not "loose".  There's no such word as "Alot".

Hi all,

Just to let you know Hayden and I are going to take the spreadsheet you all kindly contributed to and figure out where to from here in the next week or two.

Which means it's time to add in anything that springs to mind that's launched since we started the spreadsheet... I can only think of Igloo - anything else out there?

cheers

Paul
