We have no issue with free speech in NZ. Its just that some people are more free to use certain speech than others. Hone, being a Special Person, has this additional right. I'll be interested in how the hui resolves the issue of liability of owning an asset that causes damage. We have dented cars and broken roofs in Christchurch after the hail storm the other night. Seems reasonable that if you want the benefit of an asset you also have to be responsible for harm caused by your asset. Of course we can expect the debate to move towards ownership of snow which puts all our ski file operators under a cloud. Farmers can no doubt expect a surcharge on rain as it falls on their paddocks. and also they'll have a view on the failure to supply during periods of draught. Or do the crop farmers get to charge Maori for the water produced through transpiration

Judging from their responses in that article, the other pollies ignore him already. Just because they do it, doesn't make it night. Use the N word I believe would constitute reason to give someone a formal written warning or even dismissal in a commercial working environment.

The leader of the Conservative Party has said some 'outrageous' things in the last few months too. They are playing to a constituency; no more, no less. Pita Sharples is in some ways more extreme because he isn't so outrageous. He actually tries to argue that Maori, and I'm one myself, should have more political power than other people. Effectively he is arguing against one person one vote. It's completely mad and as I say: 'If one person one vote is good enough for Nelson Mandela, it's good enough for me'. But some people actually listen, Auckland Super City Council came very close to having members selected by skin colour, not popular vote. By comparison Hone is kind of a joke. He has about as much chance to influence our daily lives as those other N-word people. Move on, nothing to see here. Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

MPs are not selected by some measure of "merit" but by votes; as it should be in a democracy. The only power that a party has over any individual MP is to remove them from their party or strip them of ministerial duties; as far as I know under our political system, an MP cannot be kicked out altogether by anyone for any reason; and if they're removed from their party they can continue to act as an independent MP or form their own party. That's not a bad thing and it's necessary for democracy to work. Who's to decide what is wrong or right if not the voting public?

I should have said: "We hear him because he is a politician and he gets media coverage". Without the media coverage he would just be a guy ranting at the pub, nobody would know to care. But you are right it is an offensive word. I would say he represents NZ the way George Bush represented America. America has done some wonderful things, space program, and some really bad things, not going there. If I was American I'd be embarrassed that Bush had been the guy in charge but he's really just a blip. So is Hone. In any serious discussion of New Zealand history 'Hone' would be assumed to be Hone Heke, not this clown. Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I sort of understand what you are saying, but in a pub someone would likely knock his teeth down his throat for such behaviour. In an employment situation he would be sanctioned and or fired, but as an independent MP he can say and do pretty much anything he likes without consequence during that term. He MAY not get re-elected, next term, but in the mean time he can behave how he likes. This is a failure in our system I believe.
