I'm having a beach themed party at the end of the month and need about 1.5m3 of sand. The thing is I only need it for the day. I can get it to and from my place (have bribed many mates). Find someone with a sandpit willing to loan you the sand for a day. Hire a trailer. Job done.

from my NZLS (next to the springs road transfer station) pricelist i picked up today: 1m3 no.1 sand (paving) $82 no.3 sand (pumice) $62 blocklayers sand $95 east coast sand $95 woodhill sand (black) $57 they will loan you a trailer that can take 1.5 m3 (i think) for free. you just need to get it off the trailer. if you really don't want it at the end, you can probably dump it at my place, i'm doing some landscaping at the moment :P Need help implementing Microsoft CRM? they will loan you a trailer that can take 1.5 m3 (i think) for free. you just need to get it off the trailer. That'd be a big trailer. A typical trailer holds 0.5 m3* and that would already be heavier than the recommended unbraked trailer weight for most vehicles. *1.8x1.2x.3 =.648

Interestingly you are actually allowed to take sand from the beach as long as its for personal use, you take it from certain areas and don't take too much. I cant remember all the details but I did this a few years ago when I needed some sandbags and all the rules where on the local council website. I still felt like thief when I did it, as I cowered behind my car, but it was perfectly legit. That would depend on the local Council. Wellington says "23.1 No person may remove from a public place any soil, sand, gravel, rock, flora, fish, fauna, or any naturally occurring thing not previously left by that person without having obtained the prior approval from the Council."

NZLS have 1 cubic metre trailers (without brakes), but a cube of sand will be heavy. My old toyota corona 2L coped but wasn't happy about towing (really noticed it stopping) a cube of topsoil and I imagine sand is a lot heavier. It should be doable depending on the car.

I've taken over a cube of soil in one of the NZLS trailers before, but maybe they wouldn't top it with sand... there is always a truck to deliver, an extra $60 I think. It would depend on the local traffic. With a car I wouldn't risk more than around 0.5m3 in an unbraked trailer. I've also got a killer hill at the end. Unless you can borrow a big 4WD I'd get it delivered if it was only $60.
