As a few of you know I recently did a course at the uni in slightly diff area after working for some time, haven't gotten a job yet with the economic climate. Spent some time with my own savings and signed up with winz and met all their obligations. I didn't qualify for the extra expenses so I saw their consultant and paid the CV service myself, I also paid for another session with a private company. Have tried to applied to low level admin but I get I don't even get interviews for those, the ones I had interviews are maybe the higher paying roles. Winz referred me a job in sales, I had a chat with them about what is appropriate or relevant for myself but I was told I still had to do take it. The option to live off my own savings is still an option b/c I'm still single, at home, we get along, have my own space. What would you do yourself? Is it as bad as people make it out?

Further study towards industry related qualification/certification is an option you should consider while you have those advantages. You will be looking for industry related work during that time, and studying will be an advantage in that.

I did phone sales for Yellow Pages about ten years ago and hated it, but it ended up being good experience that helped me in my subsequent job seeking because I learnt good skills in marketing, dealing with people, understanding the small business environment, etc. Personally I think if you can't get a job that you want then a job that you don't want is better than no job because you can take advantage of the opportunity to gain work experience even if it doesn't immediately seem relevant to what you want to be doing. The caveat would be making sure that it's a reputable employer who isn't going to conduct themselves in a way that you would be uncomfortable with as some sales forces tend to do.

@alasta I'm not given an option, they just said you have to take it or these are the condtions .. The one referred to me, it was Telesales, working at home and phoning people with my own phone. I gather it was just about selling people various things ...

People hate getting those calls, especially now when there are so many scam ones out of india. I would avoid doing a cold calling job. Some of the products sold door to door/via the phone using the hard sell approach, are questionable products too.

I have done phone and door to door sales, rough work but good money and work experience. Rough on that there are many very rude people out there, and hours for door to door can be a bit poos. In your position, being that you dont have much in the way of monetary commitments, i would be looking for supermarket or service station work. Its not glamorous but its easy money. The problem is that they say take this job or else ... they will stop your payments and then they may see you every week at the seminars to keep a tab on you. I could just flag it altogether, I don't have that much commitments. Dig into my savings. Re: those entry jobs. If one is in their 30s and have worked in proper office jobs before - 60k+. Do they even look at you and even if so would their be much advantage on the CV? I went to uni 10yr ago .. worked for some years and only went back again when I wanted to train in accounting which is just slightly diff to where I worked before. Edit - dunno how it works exactly. But it's $14/hr, wasn't told of commission. I guess they might check phone call records or something or if they have a machine that records conversation lengths.

I that case you could do some free intern work at an accountants. I doubt they would turn down someone willing to work for free. Also I would have thought that WINZ would have some scheme that may pay them to take you on, instead of paying the dole. I recall them subsitidising people to work at McD's some time ago.

Hi, what sort of stuff did you sell, door to door. and what were the demographics of the customers you sold to. I live in West Auckland and the only door to door salesmen I see are usually selling telecom, or electrical, company packages.
