i wish i had access to lay a fibre down the street.... i'd definately do it myself. problem is that digging up footpaths (thrusting might fail in mt eden due to all the rock) is expensive as are permits and resource consents :S

If all it took for me to get UFB was to dig the trench I would be out with my shovel in a heartbeat

No kidding! Perhaps Chorus needs to add a "DIY UFB" section to its website ;)

I'd be getting the cousin over with the digger, screw the shovel ;)

I was very disappointed to learn that all the digging in the road outside work is not for fiber, just to replace the manky footpaths with newer ones.

About 18 years ago, the company I worked for was looking at cabling up neighbourhood blocks by creating a backbone along the back fences of residential properties. It was very cheap to do it but we rejected it because of other issues.

Instead of running cabled services under footpaths it could be better to design subdivisions with a service channel running through the centre of each block. Typically, this more than halves the trenching required to get to each property.
