Can anyone advise me on what the best deal is on getting broadband and phone which includes free national calls. This is for my parent-in-laws who currently have a dial-up conection. They also have Sky including sky sports and have a prepaid mobile - which they rarely use. They only need a small data plan 3-5 GB should be plenty. From my research I think I will go with Orcon or Vodafone given the sky sports discount you get. Any other advise out there?

TBH its best to let each provider focus on the services they provide or you'll get stuck in the future tied into one provider. Wait till the Xnet plans come out next week and check them out IMO.

depends where you live since prices vary somewhat according to geographical location. what city/town do they live in?

3 to 5 GB might be ok to start. Allow for an upgrade path to 10GB or more. You need to allow for regular automatic maintenance of Windows, anti-virus applications, etc. Once the bandwidth is increased, you might find social network usage also increases, etc.

TelstraClear's $75 for 40Gb. Being retired, they'll be spending much more time on the net than when they were working and will use plenty of data skyping the grand kids, watching TV catch up and using QuickFlix to catch older movies they like. Promote New Zealand - Get yourself a .kiwi.nz domain name!!! Check out mine - i.am.a.can.do.kiwi.nz

I think that is probably the worst option for them. Given the status (moving from dialup, older people) it is very unlikely they will be looking to shop around every year and ensure they are on the right plan, and we know the Telstraclear plan jumps up to $105 after 12 months if they don’t do anything. It’s fine for people who are happy to shop around and move providers every year, but I bet these people don’t want that hassle. Plus it doesn’t include free national calling which was what they asked for, that would be an extra $15(or is it $20?) on top of the $75 anyway Something like Orcon genius would be better. $75, 5GB, free national calling, and the price won’t go up. If they find they are using more data, then they can upgrade.

The vodafone plan with free MySky upgrade is pretty good. Telecom Total Home is pretty good too, and Telecom will put the mobile on their home phone bill, but only charge when it is used (ie. no monthly bill for it). I have a phone on this that I rarely use for calling, and I pay $6 for a number of Texts and another $6 for some megs of data (can't remember how many though).

Thanks for the advice. They live in Dunedin and I confident the 5GB will be more than enough data.
