@Mr-so-called-DravidDavid Obviously you didn't read my original post thoroughly, I shouldn't have to point out the difference between quality and speed (but it appears that I have to anyway). I don't see how a minuscule increase in sync rate from a master filter could prevent my speeds dropping from 1.8mbps to 0.18mbps every night and my ping to Auckland from trying to break the 4 second barrier. If we pop my attenuation into a calculator that assumes no wiring issues it produces a distance of 4.2Km. As the distance between my house and the exchange is probably over that distance, would it be safe to assume that my wiring isn't at fault and the purchase of an expensive filter unnecessary? I pay my ISP to provide a service which they have done without fault for 5 years but now suddenly can't. Would a new customer coming onto a BUBA exchange be able to turn a stable connection into a wildly unstable one in just a night? My new modem has arrived and tonight I will do the mother of all tests. I'll update this thread with what I find.

Quality is degrading because of the service you are connecting to being rural as per previous post. A master splitter will bypass your old crappy wiring, increase the speed and help the stability of the connection anyway. You could potentially double the speed and stability of the connection with a master splitter. In comparison to what you spend each year on the services, the 150 dollar installation fee is nothing! Sometimes what you don't get it a blessing in disguise!

Cbfd: Ok - you are beung fed from ngahinapour exch whch is opp the school (white uax building) which is an asam - so guessing your speeds are bad at peak timea due to congestion Excellent. Someone with good local knowledge.

As well you know, it's not always been like this, only very recently. What I'm trying to determine is whether or not these massive ping spikes and disconnections are usual practice for a congested ASAM, because like I've said numerous times, I don't see how my internal wiring can be good as gold from 3am to 3pm, then be 'crappy' and then recover at 3am again. The distance between the residence and the exchange haven't changed, so why all of a sudden is the distance causing massive degradation? I want an unblinkered opinion on whether something can be done on the exchange's end (and I'm 99% sure this is the source of the problem now that I've done multiple isolation tests with two different modems with no affect on performance) or whether I am now paying for a service that only functions for the least useful part of the day.

Your're right, it probably is the ASAM that is the cause of the problem, due to the fact BUBA sucks! I doubt it will be upgraded any time soon, which is the only thing that would fix a congestion issue. I have a wiring issue as you may already know, when it gets damp at night, internet sucks, ping goes through the roof and sync speed drops. When it rains, internet drops, when the wind blows, internet drops. If your wiring is 9 years old, you could have 200th generation rats knocking something somewhere in the walls that return to cause havok at a specific time of day/night. Until you rip the wiring out and connect the modem directly to the ETP, your isolation testing is not complete. You can pay a contracted 200 dollars to do this and tell you wiring is the problem, then a further 150 to 200 to have the splitter installed by chorus, or you could just ask em' to install one, benifit from better sync rates and stabalize your internet. :) Sometimes what you don't get it a blessing in disguise!

My experience was with a conklin dslam, not BUBA, however believe me a adsl connection which has worked well at 2-3.5 Mbps for years is quite capable of crashing to a couple of hundred kbps over night. The ISP can do nothing about it if Chorus won't upgrade the backhaul. It sucks that you pay the ISP the same whether you get a good service or bad. Made no sense to me either. Your exchange is close to a school? Did the school get put on a high service level at the expense of everyone else? Reading through the thread, my guess is can kiss the adsl goodbye if you require acceptable performance.

colinuu: My experience was with a conklin dslam, not BUBA, Conklins only do BUBA. You were worse off! Incindre is lucky :) Sometimes what you don't get it a blessing in disguise!

The exchange you are connected to is ADSL1 only This is due to be upgraded by end of 2013, so atleast 1 year away. Your broadband will continue to get worse until then. - A master splitter will help marginally - A master splitter will help more significantly once exchange has been upgraded - An RBI solution will give you immediate improvement now. I think I'm ready to close the thread. I confident that the wiring (including the internal) is fine and my problem lies within the little white shack that is probably having a hard time coping with some new-arrival heavy-user(s). Thanks guys, I understand things better now, and if it's true that nothing can be done to deal with congestions issues, I'll just have to live with it until 2014 Cheers to everyone who contributed!
