Hi all, Thought I would post my question here for some advice on a central splitter. My Aunty in Auckland has a St Johns monitored alarm which calls back to the Ops centre in case of emergency and she is considering dropping the dailup connection and going on an ADSL plan soon. The main issue being she has had conflicting information about needing a Central filter installed. My understanding has always been that one will be required. If so what would be considered a fair price for installation for a pensioner do you think? Appreciate your input chaps. Regards ... Dean

It is not mandatory, but very highly recommended. You can go for the plug in filters on each TO, but they are a band aid type solution at best. Coffeebaron is the person to contact in Auckland for an install.

I should confirm, she's not looking at going naked DSL with VoIP is she? The St John alarms are unreliable over VoIP, but should be fine over POTS / DSL.

Are those St Johns alarms just plugged into a standard telephone socket? If so would they take a standard filter, rather than the expense of a splitter?

Thanks for the prompt reply, the line wont have Voip more than likely a standard connection from either Telecom or Orcon. Not sure of the actual setup I'm not sure how it is wired as I'm in Aussie. I have sent a PM to coffeebaron so thanks for that. Just after an idea on price for her so she can start saving up for it as she is on a pension. Regards ... Dean

True, though aren't St John's having some financial troubles? Funding development\rollout of something like that probably isn't top of their list of things to do.

I'd recommend Telecom. They are easy to deal with, the gear they will send will work out of the box and their service/speed is pretty good. Is she with Telecom already for her dialup?

Telecom is your best bet, I doubt the alarm will work via a Genius from Orcon. And Coffeebaron is the person to contact for the filter install.

Also I don't think they (Genius) have a UPS, so won't work in a power cut either, something which is pretty important for a lot of elderly people. You could also look at Vodafone's offerings.

Most ISP's now will just book a Chorus tech to install a splitter as soon as they here the word 'alarm' on the phone. It isn't technically necessary but probably a good idea. Edit: Also, I would of thought Flip (http://www.flip.co.nz) would be a really good choice for a pensioner. Not a lot of data but is a lot required? Edit again: Why did the BB code turn in to HTML!? St Johns do now have an IP option for medic alarm. Thanks for your PM Dean, will reply directly soon. Price for geekzone members / referrals is $150 for master splitter install.
