Hello all, Is anyone aware of a low-mid end DSL router or router which allows one to measure internet usage by IP address? I'm aware of software solutions like MS ISA, or linux solutions but would like something that doesn't require a machine on 24/7. The N1 Vision from Belkin does that... Don't think it's a "low-mid end DSL router" though. Very expensive, but full featured. Find me on Twitter! I posted 1, 2 x 10^3 times!

Thanks, its worth considering. You need Zenbu. Its just I'm considering buying a house and possibly getting a few boarders, and would like to set boundaries on the interwebs since its a metered plan. For $249 you can get a router with vouchers which you can print for $zero and give or sell to your boareders so they have a fixed amount of data per month to use [or any amount you want to give them or sell them]. That way they won't be chewing up your data cap and won't block your ADSL downloading movies so others can't use it. Your problem is exactly one of the problems Zenbu is designed to solve. Have a look at http://www.Zenbu.net.nz There are no ongoing charges or any other costs involved other than the $249 purchase.

On reading my post again, it's not clear. Printing vouchers costs the zone operators nothing and they can print vouchers in amounts of $10, $20, up to $100. You can sell or give away those vouchers, keeping all the money you receive from them. The Zenbu system monitors each voucher's usage and debits the voucher at 10c a megabyte. When the value of the voucher is used up, that voucher is canceled.

Is it possible to use WEP or WPA with the hotspot? Zenbu acts as a PUBLIC hotspot, as therefore there won't be security (I'm not sure if you can personalise it, so this is not definite) Zenbu is Internet Hotspot service, so naturally, no file sharing. Could use Ad Hoc networks to do that. Find me on Twitter! I posted 1, 2 x 10^3 times!

signz: I just installed a Netgear DGFV338 and it has a monthly allowance and will cap usage at that and either stop all traffic or stop everything except email. Not ideal but a start. DS Should let them use as much as they like, then charge the overage for it. Find me on Twitter! I posted 1, 2 x 10^3 times!

You could configure each lan port onto a different vlan so they get seperate IP's etc. You would then need to get it to nat those which is something I have no idea on since I have only set vlans up on my wrt's to give seperate ssid's for different ethernet segments. I am sure its doable if you ask on the openwrt forums however. Richard rich.ms

probabably more than you want to spend, this is the router i install for my business customers where internet is critical Breaks down by PC, Traffic, Port etc on Daily, Weekly, Monthly basis. Hi there I use a sonicwall firewall to track usage by IP address on the LAN. These are cheap as chips on ebay and are ICSA certified firewalls. I use an eight year old one and it works fine. I see there's a SOHO3 w. 10 client license on ebay for $US25 at present. My setup phone line > dynalink 4 pt DSL > sonicwall soho > 10/100 switch > patch panel > Linksys WRT54G router/access point I turn filtering and firewalling off on the dynalink and linksys and do everything on the sonicwall I turn DHCP off on everything except the sonicwall which allocates DNS and both static and dynamic LAN addresses The sonicwall shows usage by the IP addresses it's allocated for whatever period you choose to track. The usage is only for WAN-LAN traffic passing across the firewall i.e. internet usage in this case Cheers
