Heya im new here so please forgive me if this is in the wrong section.
I have a Dyanalink RTA 1335 however it keeps overheating. I have got the store to replace it but the new one does the same thing. I opened up the case and inside theres a chip that gets very hot causing the device to crash. Im thinking of putting a fan inside the case and cutting the plastic grill out of the top to mount it there.
The powersupply is a 12VAC 1A AC Adaptor im just wondering if it would be okay to solder a 12v fan from an old computer cpu into the circut just after the switch so that it runs to keep it cool. *im guessing the reason for it heating up so much is poor air circulation the case is very badly designed in my opinion.*
Would the device suffer from any problems if i were to do this?? If i have it in pararall to the switch or the input it shouldnt distrube the modems usage right?

That's odd. I know there were some issues with the older RTA135's overheating. I've replaced a few at customer sites that have been decidedly brown thru overheating. However I thought the newer ones had resolved this issue.
I have an RTA1335 right here on top of my PC that's on continuously and it's only slightly warm to the touch, certainly not hot.
MegaByte: hmm okay i shall try to force it when i get home thanks.
whats the difference between the adsl versions though? any problems with conencting to net or slower speeds?
Unless you are on FS/FS plan I doubt you will get more than approx 4Mbit down. My point being unless you purchased a full speed plan from your ISP you shouldn't be significantly disadvantaged by being on g.dmt if at all
I also intend to leave my rta1320 open tonight as well [the screws are apparently under the rubber feet]
Dynalink Tech Support are very responsive too - email or call them
But try forcing the unit to g.dmt tonight and PM me
Okay thanks for that info and yes the screws are under the rubber feat quite easy to get off and into my case was kinad hard to pull appart first time ill try it running with just case off and if it dies a fan. Mine dies in about 90 mins as well but sometimes it takes longer.
Ill switch over to it soon im using a default DLINK one that i got from xtra ages ago at the moment.
I am on a FS/FS plan so prehaps forcing g.dmt [adsl1] is bad?
Eitherway ill get back to you guys on what happens after a few hours
I have a couple of RTA1320's at home and both heat up considerably when in use and even when they were just plugged in and turned on (no pc attached or DSL sync)
I have seen a few suggestions in the past where people have added a small heatsink the the black chip inside (silent cooling) and where people have modified the case to accomodate a fan.
One of the issues with modifying the case though is you will lose any warranty you may have with Dyna Link
From my experiences this is a common problem
