Topic # 42692 8-Oct-2009 22:50 Send private message

Hi all

Help required please.

I have an excellent ADSL2 connection (15mbs, confirmed by the Telecom Broadband helpdesk).

I'm on the 10gb Explorer plan, and am nowhere near my cap.

Yet for the last 4 days I have been getting between only 50 - 80KB/s download speed, at any time of the day or night. For example, right now I'm screaming along at 74KB/s. Last week I was getting around 600.

Telecom can't help - they say my connection is great, and have advised that there is something wrong with my browser. I have cleared the cache etc, with no improvement.

Any ideas at all please?

Have you tried different computers on the same connection?
Have you tried different browsers on the same computer, and same connection?
Have you reset your modem?

Can you please post your modem stats?

1MB Download test

Test Completed

Broadband Speed Test Meter

Your line speed is approximately 459.8 Kbps or 56.3 KB/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 18.778 seconds
Size of file: 1058 Kilobytes
Estimated line speed: 459.8 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 56.3 (kilobytes/second)

And what do you get from speedtest.net ?
I find the TNZ speedtest to be terrible, and speedtest.net is more accurate.

Ok, so your speedtest.net results are fine.
If you were to download itunes, or start it, what is the speed recorded?
Eg, I get 1.22MB/sec using IE8 on my xtra connection.

Okay - 1.5 (ish) MB/sec. Which is pretty damn good.

Why then, is the Telecom Speed test only showing 70KB/s, when last week it was around 600KB/s?

The reason this has come about is the wife has been complaining about very slow internet speed, which was backed up by the Telecom Speed test.

(BTW - I do feel a little silly now)

I would say their speedtest is broken.

Hey, its almost midnight... no one will notice, all will be forgotten by morning... or will it?

The wife does not forget. Nor forgive. Nor believe anything I say any more. Anything.

If she can't get her YouTube video of that bloody Michael Jackson "This is It" trailer downloaded within 15 seconds it's my fault. Always.

Sigh.

Thanks for the help, BTW - much appreciated.
