I have noticed a few threads lately along the lines of "XYZ ISP is throttling torrents now!", and in a lot of cases most of the people with this problem have upgraded to µTorrent 2.0.1. The following will help if: 1) You are using v2.0.1 of µTorrent 2) You have an upload speed limit set in µTorrent Basically the new version of µTorrent calculates your bandwidth limits a little differently and by default includes protocol overheads in the calculation. So, if you set a low upload limit of something like 16kB/s you are effectively limiting your download speed to somewhere between 150kB/s and 200kB/s. Fortunately you can disable this calculation as follows: 1) Navigate to Options / Preferences / Advanced in µTorrent 2) Find the item net.calc_overhead and set it to 'false'. Your speeds should return to normal.

Or the alternative would be to increase the up speeds a bit to compensate for the overhead, without changing the other settings. Probably the same results. Your speeds should return to normal. Their forums have a lot of speed tweaking information for 2.0.1, I finally gave up and reverted back to 1.8.5 and have been happily back to normal ever since. Sometimes my sense of change gets the better of me

Ah, nice! This would explain a few things that I had issues with! So does disabling this feature remove any download 'limits' altogether, or just allow slightly more upload speed (to the value of your overhead) therefore allowing higher download speeds? Does anyone have any ideas what kind of percentage overhead you'd have on utorrent uploads?

Does anyone have any ideas what kind of percentage overhead you'd have on utorrent uploads? on my speeds i need to set the upload limit to about 28kbs to get good download speeds , but before i could set it at 1kbs and get the same download speeds. but the problem was that everyone was setting ther upload speeds lower than they should and when that happens download speeds suffer for everybody, so the new version fixes that problem, but if uploads count towards your cap then if you have it that high someone else is getting all your data.

You should considering using http download sites or newsnet rather than bit torrent if you don't want to upload, restricting upload kind of defeats the point of p2p imo.

I have found since using 2.0.1 a real variance of speeds, sometimes it will be churning along nicely at 200-300kbs and then will go right back to 20 for a while, then speed up again, seems to be a lot more erractic that previous versions...

I'm not that happy with 2.0.1, for several reasons. Mainly, I've noticed that the overhead for connections with other utor 1.8.5+ clients results in a huge overhead of around 30% and remaining constant @ 30% as upload increases. I have it on authority that this is due to the uTP communication overhead. Eventually I'm going to disable uTP is possible. There are some other issues I have with it that I can't go into further detail about, mostly relating to uTP, but also I'm not too happy with how it operates within the swarm. k1wi

I actually just use utorr 1.7.7 for sites that allow it. Pretty much the only sites that don't 1.7.7 are those that have time bonuses (you can pause & still earn seed bonuses with 1.7.7 as it reports as just seeding). Even then enough people cap their UL on torrents to 1kB/s to earn seed bonuses. Partly why they just don't work.

Sometimes my sense of change gets the better of me Ha - couldn't agree more, always looking for the latest 'better' version, often not the case. I too have reverted back to 1.8.5 and all good...
