I bought a new house a month ago, and I'm a bit disappointed with the sync to the exchange. I'm currently on naked bb with Vodafone. Only one jack point of three is in use, with the Vodafone complete modem/router combo plugged in. Stats are as follows Downstream 6610kbps. Max Rate 7796. Attenuation 19.9 snr 9.5 Upstream is over 1mbps so thats fine attenuation 35 I'm guessing it might be a wiring issue. Is there anyone I can call to have a look at it. Corus don't seem to care as long as I have an active connection. Any advice would be appreciated

Some details of the house wiring would be useful. Structured cabling / daisy chained? Do you have a master filter? *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

I'm also curious as to how you have a 9.5dB noise margin, this should be ~12dB on a Telecom Wholesale connection and 6dB on most ULL connections. Are you connected to cabinet or exchange, ULL or wholesale, and what is your approximate distance? *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

The wiring runs under the house, which was constructed in the 70's. I don't believe there is a master filter. I am on ULL with Vodafone. Connected directly to the MSY/Exchange Im pretty sure looking at the map that I'm not connected to a cabinet.

Your modulation appears to be ADSL2 - can you set it to ADSL2+ ?

After using the advanced login and un-ticking all options other than ADSL2+ saving and rebooting twice for some reason it still says ADSL2. With fresh logins I can confirm that no other box is selected in the modulation menu

Being on the edge of the MSY/Exchange area instead of a cabinet is the reason for 19dB attenuation -- means you have a distance issue but shouldn't be too bad. Your noise margin has fluctuated a bit for it to end up with 8dB, and ADSL2 has slowed down to keep the connection stable. It has may have switched to a long reach profile because of the high attenuation but should still be able to pickup faster speed if the signal can be improved. Combined with the line distance, house wiring could have quite a noticeable effect on the signal and noise margin so, as sbiddle mentioned, a master filter would be a sensible investment. Qualified in business, certified in fibre, stuck in copper, have to keep going ^_^

Can you find where the line comes in to your house easily (demarc)? If so, if you have moderate hanyman skills, you can install a filter yourself without too much drama. If you are running naked DSL with no phones, you don't technically need the filter, but it will isolate any dodgy existing wiring...

Ok I've had a look under the house, and I think I'd rather pay someone who knows what they are doing. There is no box as such just cables coming out of the ground. It looks a bit messy to me. What might it cost for someone to come out and have a look?

Reality at the end of the day is that the vast majority of users with ADSL2+ without a master filter installed will have degraded performance. Can I also select which jackpoint I want to use? At the moment I'm using the point that was installed by a sky tech. Its the closest jackpoint to the telephone cables from the street. Literally a few meters, but it is probably spliced from the jack in the kitchen, which is further away from the cable entrance to the house. I suspect the kitchen jackpoint is the main jackpoint.
