You are probably going to have to pay $500 min for a rural phone/adsl connection.

Your information isn't going to give us much to suggest to you. To really offer advice you're going to need to give a location, "1hr from Christchurch" could be any number of places.

The first thing would be to look at the Chorus SAT www.chorus.co.nz/sat to determine if DSL is available at your location.

North - Call Chris at Amuri.net

South - Cal Matt at Wireless web.

Bottom lines, you're going to pay some sort of install/set up fee if it's off the Chorus network. These guys provide fantastic services across the whole of Canterbury, but do you actually expect them to drive out to your place for free to install gear - no of course you don't.

I don't know if you can do RBI installations as a self install, but even with that you're going to have some set up and if you don't have some basic clue then you'll have little idea about how to set it up so it works well, though I'm sure you'll get something working, it's not rocket science, but even at full speed (assuming your area has been upgraded) I doubt that 7.5mbit 3G modems they're using will touch either Matt or Chris's service.

HTH.

Ok, well if you can get dsl then it's all just about how far you are from the cabinet/exchange.

In DSL, you're just looking for a Chorus partner as said.

If you are in Methven you may be lucky enough to tap into the Electricity Ashburton fibre network.

Their cable has to go past your door and it is not cheap.

But it is fast.

Did you read the OP's title, or the last line, in coloured bold type?

If you're in Methven, and you're able to get ADSL (Sounds very much like it) then that's going to be the cheapest fixed line option.

If you are there for 5 weekends a year skiing, then just get a Mobile BB solution from whichever provider gives either the best coverage, or the best plan (depending on which is more important - performance or price)

We need a bit more info to make a proper recommendation.

- What sort of use do you expect? (full family surfing all day with lots of youtube?)
- Is it unoccupied for lots of the year?

Cheers - N

Just had another look.

Methven can get VDSL2 and ADSL2+ in 'town', and ADSL out quite a distance.

As has been mentioned, plug your address into this : http://www.chorus.co.nz/sat

Cheers - N

A bit late to the game seeing as you could get ADSL but for anyone else looking another option is Scorch Communications, they are a wireless provider in the Canterbury region and have been around for awhile now.

As mentioned though if you are not going through the copper lines through the install costs are going to be quite different.

It can't hurt to ask maybe say you'll pay for an wireless modem/router and pay for the amount you use which at a couple of hundred MB's per year will be sod all
