Hi all,

I've been an occasional browser for the past few years and it's just lately that I've read GZ regularly. Impressed by what seems to be NZ's most informative forum for tech stuff - seems to be a great crowd here.

I'm hoping to get some ADSL-related advice. I've been with Orcon for many many years and am still on one of their legacy ADSL2+ plans... 12GB + Homeline for circa $80 monthly, with each extra GB being $2. I realised when I got on here that our internet usage is actually far lower than most, but we do end up paying for at least a few extra GBs every month. I've decided it's time to quit the Orcon plan and move; I have a fair idea of my options - Orcon's and Telecom's new plans and perhaps Snap (but this has become less competitive after Orcon and Telecom released their new plans.

Firstly though, I need to figure out why our speeds are absolutely terrible:

The house has a monitored alarm from the previous owners. It's no longer being monitored but the phone line passes through the alarm panel, and there are 3 phone jacks - one goes to the modem, one goes to a filter which our analog phone plugs into, and the other is unused. I have tried removing the filter and analog phone - this resulted in an increase in download speed of approx. 1Mbps and similarly for upload. I have tried removing the lines from the alarm panel but this resulted in all the wall jacks going dead, so I am unable to get an idea of whether speed would increase if it bypasses the alarm panel.

I understand I could get a master splitter installed which should increase speed, but would it even be possible for that to increase speed to 10+Mbps (which seems to be easily attainable from the posts I have seen on here?). Is there anything else I need to test, or do I have to try the master splitter route and see?

My other consideration is the ISP - Orcon's new deals seem great, but they are VoIP plans. I am open to going VoIP but it's new to me and I feel I haven't done enough research into it (such as what phones to get) and I don't really want to just hop on the default Genius bandwagon. I'm tempted to go Telecom just because theirs are POTS deals, so in the event we want to get our alarm monitored, we can do so easily. I'm not averse to getting a alarm if a good one that is fully compatible with VoIP exists, but again I haven't done much research into this. I also know people in the area who are getting good speeds with Telecom and am hopeful that it is the ISP that's the problem. I have no idea how far I am from the nearest cabinet is (I'm in Epsom, Auckland) and to be honest I don't know what a cabinet looks like - how do I find out, is there some online map of cabinets by area? I have seen the http://bcc.telecomwholesale.co.nz/# site, which says my cabinet is MOD/W, but it doesn't seem to show the exact location.

The modem is a TP-Link TD-8840. Stats as below:

This is the guy that can solve your problem (installing master splitter): coffeebaron

Try emailing him.

In term of alarm monitoring, you can always use wireless/GSM. My security company installed the unit for me. Say goodbye to phone line rental.

The first three things you need to establish is what your speeds should be, and whether you're on a ULL or Chorus wholesale connection, and whether you're served from a cabinet or exchange.

www.chorus.co.nz/sat will tell you whether you're in a 10Mbps zone or not. If you are you should receive sync speeds of 10Mbps or greater. It'll also tell you whether you're cabinetised or fed from an ecchange.

Only you can tell us if you're on a ULL lor wholesale plan.

It could be that you're cabinetised by on a legacy ULL connection and fed from an exchange which would explain the poor speeds, search my blog and the many threads on here for an explanation of the issue.

And lastly inetnal home wiring is the single biggest cause of the speed issues. A master filter is essential to get the maximum performance from ADSL2+.

As above, I can come install a master splitter - Geekzone member price $150 (Auckland / Waikato urban). I will also check through your plan / settings etc to make sure you are not on an old speed capped plan or UUL when you should be cabinet feed etc.

Cheers
Fraser

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their ADSL broadband network faster. Why not spend a couple of hundred to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?
Geekzone special price: $150* for master splitter install, normally $200+ through your ISP. Auckland and Waikato areas.
*Travel charges may apply. Additional costs may apply for complex installs.
I install - Naked DSL, DSL Master Splitters, VoIP, RBI Rural Broadband. Also a dealer for WorldxChange.

The 6.5dB SNR margin reported suggests ULL (i.e. not Chorus) gear.

The 43dB attenuation indicates (other problems aside) several kms of cable.

If you are showing as in a cabinetised area 10Mb zone, then it's very likely you are on a ULL connection fed direct from the exchange, rather than the closer cabinet.

Search this forum for midspan injection and you'll get an idea of the problem.

If you want to stay with the same ISP, then ring Orcon, and ask about being migrated to the cabinet instead.

EDIT: as noted above, a master filter is a very good idea as well.

Thanks everyone for the quick and informative replies.

@nakedmolerat: If you don't mind, would you be happy to PM me how much you paid for the installation of the wireless alarm monitoring service, and any monthly charges?

@sbiddle: I've used your link and it shows I'm on the MOD/W cabinet and in the 10 Mbps zone. Also read your blog and its very informative - thank you.

@RunningMan: Thanks for interpreting the results - having just read Steve's blog as well I think I'm starting to understand what results I should be seeing.

It seems that given I am already considering switching ISPs and since Telecom is one of my top options, then I should switch to them as a first step and see if it improves my speed, given (and correct me if I'm wrong) all connections with Telecom would not have the abovementioned issues with ULL and therefore it eliminates one of the possible reasons for the speed drop. Does that sound right?

@coffeebaron: Thanks for posting Fraser. I was already planning to contact you if I went down the master filter route as I'd seen your posts in other threads. Will definitely give you a call if so.

I am pretty sure it is free when i go on 12 months contract. Cost to monitor is only $25+gst monthly. I cannot remember the cost if purchase outright but definitely round about $250.

Yep!

While you're at it though, get a master filter - it solves a bunch of other wiring related issues.

You've received good advice so far - just another comment that I believe there's a high chance that your speeds are because you are on an Orcon LLU connection. Unfortunately for commercial reasons, Orcon don't migrate customers from LLU to cabinetised connections when the cabinet is installed.

This often results in a huge speed drop for those customers. They will migrate you if you ask, but there may be an additional charge involved.

Sounds like you're open to changing ISP, but you may not have to in order to get better speed - you may just have to specify to Orcon that you would prefer to be on the wholesale cabinetised product.

It's beyond me why they aren't proactive about this - probably 50% of the Orcon users that complain about speed issues on here are affected by this issue.

Cheers - N

Profit. Guess it matters more to them than happy customers. IMO thats a good reason to move out of principle since they KNOW your sync speeds, the location, the time the cabinets were installed and chose to leave you on a banana republic quality internet connection.
