I currently have a 3G mobile data connection only and was hoping to change to a naked ADSL connection. I checked my address using www.chorus.co.nz/sat and got the following message:

"this address is in an exchange area where the exchange has been upgraded with faster broadband equipment. However, please note that this address is outside the optimum coverage area for faster broadband - which will affect performance."

How do I find out something more specific about the quality of the connection I will get?

I think faster broadband means, 10mbps+ so you will probably not see the benefits of ADSL2+ and be getting ADSL1 speeds <8mpbs.

The quality should be perfectly fine if the internal wiring of the property is adequate.

Any ISP can provide you with more accurate details from a prequal.

In general, is the quality of the connection independent of which ISP you choose?

Most ISPs buy a wholesale connection from Chorus, so the connection between you and ISP is essentially the same with any ISP.

What the particular ISP does with your traffic, and how good your experience with them will be is up to them. For example, some of the cheap unlimited type plans suffer from congestion at peak times.

There are a minority of ISPs that have their own equipment in the phone exchanges (ULL - Unbundled Local Loop) that doesn't use Chorus gear. I don't know if this applies to your particular area though - someone with local knowledge would need to answer.

I've checked a couple of Addresses on that road and it seems its all BUBA ADSL1 off a Cabinet (which is not on SAT) is how you may be connected. The best thing is to call your ISP and give them your exact address and they'll tell you what you can get.
