My parents computer is running slow. I've used Ccleaner, disabled some software running at startup and checked for viruses and malware. They currently use Incredimail which is a dog of a thing. My question is how can I shift all their inbox and folders to outlook or thunderbird?

Hi, what provider is their email with currently?

Anyway, setup a gmail account, and then enable imap on gmail (temporarily) so you can sync the email. Unfortunately incredimail is so incredulous that it wont support folder sync, so you may need to move emails in folders into the inbox (duh) to get them to sync, I cannot say how it will work as it seems a bit incredimail is a bit thick. Alternatively just forward all your existing email to the gmail account, but thats a bit clumsy.

Anyway once done you can then either forward you email from your current email provider, or get gmail to poll the account regularly. Once setup you can then add the original email address for authentication and then you will be able to send and recieve emails from the original email address (if that is desirable).

Thanks for that info.

They have an old ihug email address through Vodafone.

I'm assuming after forwarding the email to gmail, I can then delete Incredimail and forward the email to outlook from there? Once outlook is set up of course. Is that correct

I tried to set up outlook today but as soon as I would open Outlook Incredimail would give me all kinds of problems.

Hi, please explain, why would you want to use outlook, the world has moved on, its 2012 things are cloud based now use the web interface, honestly it will liberate you from last century technology, if it be your pc, smartphone or tablet.

If you login to the voda/ihag account you can set it to forward all email, also tell it to not keep a copy if that option is offered.

I was just looking for something simple for my parents to use. They are in their late 60's and have no computer knowledge. Outlook is installed on their computer which runs windows xp, So I had planned to use that.

hi, fine then use it, but when the machine finally falls over your back there reinstalling everything and hoping you can recover the pst file.

Or, you just tell them get a new machine, any machine, tablet, whatever, they just browse to gmail.com and put in their credentials and its all back to as it was, no effort.

Thats a great point. I will try and convince them to go to web based email. Thanks for your help.

Gmail can also pull from other email accounts using pop, if emails are still on the ihug server, you may even get lucky and gmail will pull them across if they are not marked as read.

If your parents still prefer clicking on a desktop program (mine do), you can then set up thunderbird to do imap sync and there are extensions to sync contacts between thunderbird and gmail. Email is synced with the cloud, but they still have an email program.

Makes me wonder why I just spent hours retrieving the outlook pst file off a laptop my parents just spilled a glass of wine over and setting outlook back up! Should have set it up like this ages ago.

i think this is the one i used, it extracts as indervidl email files so you could drag and drop them into somthing like windows live mail.
