Topic # 104141 15-Jun-2012 17:18 Send private message

I understand that Backflip online backup service is part of Slingshot. There have been some rather negative reports on GZ about this service, so I though I'd add my two cents worth to warn people about dealing with them.

Despite having servers in NZ and a fast upload speed compared to overseas services, Backflip has a whole lot of negatives. Firstly, they haven't responded to any of my emails over the last week. There is no phone number to call if you run into problems. I'm currently not able to connect for some reason, but there is nothing I can do about this except spend time troubleshooting the problem myself (I thought backup solutions were supposed to be simple, and set-and-forget). The software backed up for a short time, but then collapsed, claiming it couldn't find the server.

Secondly, the software is butt-ugly and looks like someone thew it together over a cup of coffee one afternoon. I'm heavily critical of crapware. This may not be an issue with some people.

Thirdly, they took my money for an upgraded service ($5 per month) and provided no service. I'm still on the free trial service, limited to 1 GB. I think that's just plain dishonest business practice. I've e-mailed every address that I can find that is connected to the company, asking that they cancel my account. They did have my credit card recorded in their system, but there appears no way to delete the number. As such, I had to replace my real credit card number with a fake number on their web site so they wouldn't keep charging me.

Not a nice story to tell, so buyer beware. I've given up on getting my $5 back.

David.

If it is being resold / promoted by slingshot, contact them about it and make a complaint.

I believe that Slingshot ONLY zero rate Backflip data that's it.
For what its worth I use Backflip my self, I would agree with the software being extremely bad boy is it slow. but other then that have no issues with Backflip, Very handy that slingshot are so kind to zero rate the data.

Yes, that correct. Only Slingshot zero-rate data to/from Backflip. I can't be bothered complaining to them over $5 and have to sit on hold forever listening to bad music. My original post was just a warning to others.

Unless the software has changed it's one of the standard online backup software programs that a lot of backup providers use so don't be suprised if you change to a different service and get the exact same software. :D
It gets rebranded with different icons and logos etc but the buttons and the layout are the same.

Yep, came across some other companies using the same awful software. I've signed up to use mazy.com which utilizes much nicer software. I'm getting 1.3 Mbps upload speeds. Not as fast as Backflip, when it was briefly working for me.

I may have been mistaken about Slingshot owning Backflip. The information I had was just hearsay. That being the case, I'm in the wrong forum.

Yes, read all the posts before writing my own post. The 3rd person in that particular thread was the source of my hearsay.

The whole software is aweful.

Did a backup with my ext drive not connected once - so there was nothign showing in the folder that I have linked all the content on those drives to.

Braindead software moved everything into the recycle bin on the server, and now is uploading it all again.

Absolute joke.

It also cant handle files being renamed and moved around. Upload the lot again. This backup job has about 1800 hours left to complete, and they are still emailing me many times each day to tell me my backup was missed. No, its STILL GOING.

And no way to prioritize backups, so changes to my files that matter get stuck in the queue behind 100's of gigs of music.

Restoring works ok at least.

Not replying to support tickets isn't good.. Could you get a chargeback and cancel it.

I'm just happy to provide a warning to people who are thinking of signing up. If I get a spare moment I'll dispute the $5 charge with my credit card company, but only to send a message to the people at Backflip who took my money and gave me nothing in return. The $5 is not that important.

David.

As a poster in the original thread, after another brief companies office search, i can confirm there are still common shareholders/directors between 'Backflip Solutions' and Callplus (parent company of Slingshot). But as its a loosely associated company, i doubt you would have any luck chasing Slingshot up for your $.

Agree about the software, that's the reason why I left them, the mac version was clunky. I believe its a branded version of the product from these guys http://www.ahsay.com/
I never had it fail on me, always worked fine, just wasnt an enjoyable experience using the software.

Not worth putting up with for the free transfers when there are so many other alternatives, much better to put your $ towards a higher broadband cap or unlimited connection.

Hi guys,

Slingshot doesn't have anything to do with Backflip apart from zero rating the traffic so you need to contact them about any grievances.

Also, this post shouldn't really be here.

I recommend Google Drive, cheap as chips and it max's out my upload speed so no problem there.

Google Drive is just the storage. It's not "backup" until you add software that manages the backup, cycles and restore if needed.

I personally use Crashplan. Tried Carbonite and Mozy before. At US$12/month for unlimited backup for up to ten PCs in the family (currently using on four), can't beat that price.
