when i type a search term in the address bar such as 'dogs' it redirects to:
http://www.google.co.nz/blank.html#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=dogs&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=2bd299b5baffbba&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=923

and i get a blank screen? (using chrome)

Same here too.

Following experimentation, the following things work:
  • using Google directly from its main page
  • performing the search, then remove blank.html from the address and try again.
  • using Incognito for the search
  • using "Paste and search" or "Search Google for..." functions in the contextual menu - for example, type your query, highlight, copy, and then right-click and hit "Paste and Search"
