An eternity ago I downloaded a tiral of ghost which had a bootable iso that would clone drives etc.

At work, grabbed the latest ghost trial and cant find it now.

Is there any alternative? Has to backup to a USB drive on a vintage P4 machine that doesnt want to do USB flash drive booting. Want to get it done today and am on internet with a cap here so cant download dozerns of things to try out.

Shadow Protect? I know it is an ISO, but do not know if it will allow you to download without purchase.

could you use Disk2VHD to turn the physical disk into a VHD Disk image that can be mounted in Windows 7 etc?

BartPE / PEBUilder with the DriveImageXML plug-in should keep your download requirements to a minimum. You'll need an XP disk, some ISO burning software, a blank CD, a burner and a bit of time to build your bootable CD though.

I haven't used it in a year or so, but I would imagine Clonezilla should fit the bill. It has a live cd which I've used to clone drives to images.

Clonezilla, used it the other week. Still great, doesn't care what it's imaging and faster than Ghost. Top it all off it's Open source :-)

Even Windows XP has VSS (Volume Shadow Copy) so you can actually image the OS disk from within windows.

Try Macrium Reflect Free, download is 31MB

Machine is crashing using clonezilla so I am guessing it is a hardware issue. Will just bring in one of my antique machines tomorrow with IDE to try to clone it and then dig another machine from the boneyard out to swap it over to.

Thanks for the suggestions but it looks like clonezilla does everything assuming I can get stuff out of the images at a later stage (or turn them into VHD's)
