Hey guys, Don't want to jinx it but it seems like I was able to get the 1y family subscription even though I was already a member. All I did was login with my account, then order the 1y subscription and then in the page to enter the CC details, I changed the email to a different one. I then got an email with the key. All seems to work after I updated the key in the desktop app. I now says I have a 1y sub. Just thought I would share, Guillaume

You kids staying up to get it free are crazy. I spent $7 and had a lie in.....well not really but its something ;) I was able to buy two of the Family unlimited as well (on different CC's) so fingers crossed they dont check the addresses and cancel one of them. yup I renewed my subscription, well kinda. Just put a different email address in and changed to family subscription for $9. Not sure if it will let me just put the new key in or if it will make me reseed but no problem either way, SNAP recently upgraded me to like a zillion teraflops or something :) Will be good for backing up the wifes mums laptop as well. Clever idea from crashplan too I reckon. In a years time there will most likely be a truckload of resubscriptions heading their way. I know I would have renewed with or without this sale although still would have been web trawling for a discount code.

I'll pay significantly more and be assured I have complete control of my data, backup and restore is very quick (Make sure you understand in the event of a failure it's going to take a LONG time to restore your data as well).

Just to be argumentative, the majority of restores which are made are for a single file here and there and not full system restores, so it has it's place. Also with features like deduplication and change-block tracking on restores starting to come out from the major players the restore process doesn't have to be so painful. Having said that, I still always believe in using the right tool for the job which for me normally means Commvault :)

For me crashplan is the last line of defence before a restore (and this is just for home). I have to have lost my shadow copies, my backup to local hard disk, backup to NAS and backup to external drive I keep at work before I need to use crashplan. This kinda does mean that if I were to use it I would be taking a very long time to download everything but if things had got that far it probably wouldnt matter about time. The thing I like about it is I dont have to remember to back stuff up and then take a hard drive off site...it just ticks along in the background and does its thing and then I get emailed a report every week telling me whats changed. For $9 whats not to like.

yup they probably arent. Then again it only takes one data loss to really learn your lesson. I dont need to learn mine again.

There's nothin stopping you from backing up to a portable harddrive as well. Means you have an offsite and fast backup. Also covers you for accidents while the online backup Is not compete. Rule of 3 people. I recommend at least two locally made backups, one that your store locally for easy access, and one you store in a remote location. Then cloud backup is sort of just an insurance policy incase you have a fire or natural disaster. The problem with it is that it will be a slow way to restore (or backup) your data, and they probably won't courier you a harddrive with your data on it at your cost if you need it quickly. t night, but it is very slow at backing up.
