Topic # 112981 31-Dec-2012 10:23 Send private message

My wife has a customer at work who has problems with her two computers and is looking for an affordable and reliable computer business to help. I manage my own computers, so I haven't used any businesses in Palmerston North. Can anyone recommend a good place in Palmerston North?
By way of background to the "problems", the customer in question is disabled and only has the use of one arm. She has two very old computers - one has Windows 95 installed - the other Windows XP. The hard drive in the 95 unit is failing and she would like to get the XP one up and running with the games she has on the 95 unit. She needs someone to come and set up the XP computer for her as she cannot lift it. She uses a joystick for these games, which she finds easier to use and therapeutic. She is aware that she may need to purchase adapter cables (PS2 to USB etc) in order to do this. Alternatively, she may need advice and installation services for a new hard drive in the 95 unit. Ideally, we're looking for a business that is affordable and reliable, that can help this customer with her computers.

Try Inhouse Computers - www.inhouse.co.nz

They are closed until Thursday, however.

I cannot recomend anyone, but the first thing I would do is say its going to be cheaper to buy a second hand working computer off trademe than to 'get one going'

Most technicians dont think its worth their time to look at something below winxp so the win95 one might be going to the dump.

Have to agree with Ray here as it's likely cheaper to either get a new / old pc with 95 on it than looking at a possible upgrade or transfer to the XP machine a lot of places charge ridiculous prices for transfer of data etc (which I've never understood) since in most instances it's a pretty easy thing to do and often no extra software is needed.

If we're talking about such a old pair of pc's too it's even easier the harder part would be that some of the techs you'd look at may not have a lot of knowledge of Win 95 due to it's age I can assure you it's not taught at schools anymore so any new tech would not be able to claim expert knowledge of it (of course in saying that it's also not rocket science we're talking about).

I don't live up that way but I'd be more inclined to get a little more info about what she's needing transferred (as in to what extent..Are we talking just getting the games on her XP machine or including full data migration onto it as well??? Is there anything else on the machine etc she would like transferred yadda yadda).

I would also like to think that once this is known that someone out there would or could help for more of doing a nice thing or a token gesture instead of just referring to a store that may or may not charge $50+ per hour (also feel $50 a hour is a cheap quote for store tech help). If this lady lived in Wellington area I know people that would help her in this way.

It's pretty much how I've learnt all I know about pc's either tinkering or helping friends, family, friends of friends out. Generally for nothing or a token gesture as pc repair places are generally rip off artists for the time put in

Please note I am not offering my services here (as I do not live in the region) lol but but would like to think someone out there could be a good samaritan. Starting the new year off with a helping a stranger could be the start of a wonderful blessing for them and even yourself.
