Topic # 112991 31-Dec-2012 20:56 Send private message

Wondering if someone can help me with painfully slow transfer speeds on my windows 7 laptop. I've noticed the speeds have been very slow for a while. Currently I'm trying to transfer 4.37gb to a flash disk, tried all three usb ports on the laptop and transfer times range from 1 hour to 14 hours! (after leaving the two files to transfer for 5mins on each port)

I've checked the task manager and cpu usage is really low, ram usage is also really low, so its not like the computer is working hard to complete the task.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tried a different flash drive?  Perhaps this one has reached the end of its useful life (~100,000 cycles) or a faulty controller in the flash drive.

I've tried two 16gb flash drives. One is only a couple of months old. Both Kingston brand.

Have you changed the settings to caching write (right-click any drive, select properties, click hardware, select the disk and change settings).

Also make sure you have up to date drivers for the USB card/adapter.

"enable writing cache on this device" is currently enabled, should I disable it?

I had the same problem to, couldn't work out to fix it either.
I found installing TeraCopy helped. http://codesector.com/teracopy
It transfers the files differently from the the way window's does  & can speed up the transfer rate.
(it worked for me)

I liked TeraCopy too until it started breaking my things! Try it on something not so important first would be my advice.

if it is so hghly variable it mus be your system

maybe hdd full and it is busy doing its paging juggling

maybe it is defragging at a higher priority

maybe the virus scanner is scanning at a higher priority

maybe the hdd is busy for some other reason?

If you are confident in the source disable your virus scanner and try again. If faster result you can later look at tweaking your AV settings to avoid this problem.

Just tried this. I max out at 2MB/s 6.54gb to transfer in 54 minutes. This can't be right can it?

They both the same model and perform the same?

It's rated at between 4 to 6 MBps write but not sure files of what size

Id say it's about right ... If you want a fast one buy according to speed see price spy for specs and cross check with google

Get USB 3 ones can write up to around 120MBps

I might not be right in saying this, but I think a lot depends on the file being transferee. A 6GB movie will transfer faster than 6GB worth of separate files like what you would find in the install folder of a video game.
