Recently I purchased Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 - Academic, online. From a large NZ online retailer.
This item was on back order for two weeks and then was shipped to me. Over this time, I had no confirmation from the retailer at all, that I am indeed entitled to an academic license.
Are they all for show? Or just a cheap way to get certain products?
I don't think that all the retailers [entirely] know what the conditions are, eg, I know the Warehouse sold Academic upgrades in every store when Vista was released, but the standard upgrade version was only found in select stores - thus, no-one bought the higher priced one. I also know that some staff were specifically told to not check for qualifying ID if they queried this.

Academic License entitles students enrolled in an educational institution to get Microsoft Products in a cheaper price or free (via DreamSpark and MSDN AA). It is strictly for educational purpose and not for commercial use. Read about it more here
