Topic # 72652 30-Nov-2010 15:32 Send private message

Not sure where to put this, so feel free to move it to the right category if i missed it.

Anyway on to the topic.

Has anyone else noticed Trade Me's lack of updates? Mainly in regards to listings.

For instance if you want to list a computer with a quad core CPU you can only list the clock speed not the number of cores.

This has lead to traders multiplying the clock speed by the number of cores, which in turn misleads customers and cripples those who do not falsely advertise.

Even more interestingly i found a thread on this issue on the trademe forums started on the 27th of June.

Some of the issues stated were game breaking, such as only being able to list HDD's up to 999GB's (no option for TB's).

Any one else had similar troubles?

Yeah I've had them up about not being able to select multiple areas when doing an advanced search.  I'm in Palmerston North so I often want to find results from Palmerston North/Manawatu, Whanganui, Masterton and Wellington.  That currently takes 4 separate searches as you can only select one area at a time.

They did however create a new field for Bluray discs vs DVD discs.  This was definitely needed, especially as many of their movie pictures were Bluray versions.

They also have separate sections for Vodafone, Telecom and 2Degrees phones.

Whilst that made sense when Telecom were CDMA and Voda were GSM (and 2degrees didn?t exist of course), it can now be confusing what with the iPhone3GS (for example) being on Vodafone, but actually designed for an 850 network, 2degrees and Vodafone phones being interchangeable, and any quad band phones being suitable for any network.

It seems that trademe are content to not innovate because they are the leaders.

Still no API to list with them

Still a shocking listing process where clicking the button to change photos will undo all the other changes to fields on the page without warning.

Still a virtually useless mobile site, which instead of fixing they make an app thats only on one platform, and not the one with the most growth.

Still a butt-ugly narrow fixed layout

Still small overcompressed images, with no ability to link to off site images

Still no layout for listings, with length too short in many cases.

Wonder what they are smoking down there in wellington to be honest.

Why fix what's not broken?

I hear what you're saying, but their target audience isn't us. It's Nanna.

If you bid on the mobile site, it sets it to be arranged for shipping, that means you cant use pay now.

They also have issues where even if you have paynow as the only available payment method, it will allow people to bid via mobile without choosing a shipping method, and then unable to pay for it.

Trademe is very broken IMO, its just its the only place that people look for things so selling on it is pretty much a requirement for anyone selling stuff online in NZ.

Its a pity, as there was a lot of changes a couple of years ago, at least its better than ebay. Sigh.

Better than eBay? Hell no - eBay can have sellers change invoices before paying.

eBay has paypal so buyers dont have to put their card numbers in every damn time they buy something, just click and put in the password.

eBay lets you have ads how you want, not just stuck in single fontsize unformattable text.

I would love to not have to deal with trademe in NZ, but I dont think that eBay have a show in hell of getting into NZ anymore.

That's the one reason I know that so many people *love* TradeMe instead of eBay.  Have you SEEN some of the pages people do on eBay?  They make your eyes bleed.

The simple "text only" means you always know where to look, you don't miss bits of information etc.

I'm sure most people would agree with me on this one (though I'm curious!), this is the one thing that TradeMe really got right and I hope don't change.

Trademe just do that so they can charge you 10c per extra photo, which isnt worth it since they butcher it into something that looks like its been sent thru MMS virtually.

They get angry if you put URLs to something as basic as photobucket to have decent quality ones, cant put links to ANYTHING in your listings, and if you want to be able to list your contact details they have a very very onesided agrement for trademe stores that they choose to ignore the restrictions for some sellers and not others.

Trademe is still stuck in the era of people selling their old stuff, and is in no way a serious contender for selling new products. If they dont sort it out someone else will come along and do it better and hopefully by then it will be too late for trademe since they have had their chance and have IMO blown it.

They deployed my products which is a half-assed attempt at solving the problem that there are many other pieces of third party software that solve better, but you cant advertise or talk about those other pieces of software on trademe, and technically the use of them is against the trademe terms and conditions, but they seem to again turn a blind eye to those violating the terms and conditions by using the software to interface with trademe.

Its interesting that you mention the Bluray category because reading the boards i found a comment saying it took them months of constant badgering to get them to add that one category.

I must admint i have never had a problem using trademe but now that people have pointed out the things its lacking i can see it does need a bit of work. However i agree the main reason i love trademe is the plain text. Buying imported electronics on ebay off people with no idea about design is horrible. I would actually pay more for something on trademe than have to go hunting through horribel listings on ebay.

I must say i much prefare the trademe layout compared to any part of the ebay layout.

This is what always happens when a big old boring incumbent company (like Fairfax) buys small young innovative company like Trademe.

Innovation stops.
