I want to get a router for my computer.  I had one when I had a VOIP phone, but it's gone now.  I don't have a home phone, though there is a jack.  There is an aerial on the roof connected to my computer.  I've been told about routers and modem routers, but I don't know which one I need.

From another forum:

"You initially asked for a "broadband router". That implies you want one with ADSL2+ built in so you can connect it to your normal 'Telecom' phoneline.

Dick Smith recommended D-Link USB Modem Router.
You don't want a modem router. Modem routers have adsl WAN interfaces (for plugging into a POTS line) which won't work with your setup. You need a broadband router with an Ethernet WAN interface.

It isn't clear how she is going to get her broadband. ThinAir normally delivers broadband and VOIP by high-speed wifi, hence her aerial.  So I'm figuring she is going back to a POTS (actually called PSTN in NZ) connection, in which case she will need an ADSL2+ modem-router."

Any ideas on what I do?  I'm getting more and more confused.  Do I still need the aerial?

Reading through your post it looks like you're with ThinAir. Have you asked them what they recommend?

No reply to emails, other than "a generic broadband router".

From their website:

If you require wireless connectivity inside your house or multiple computers connected, a router is available for $129 + GST.

Unless you are confident with configuring a router yourself, this may be your best option - assuming they configure it for you.
