I have a core i7-920 and I have been noticing that core i7-9xx upgrades are disappearing from the vendor websites.  They can still be found on pricespy.co.nz and I suppose I can order them in specially from one of the reputable vendors.

Does this mean that the days of the i7-9xx are numbered ?

The CPU still gives good performance for my day-day tasks, but I can get almost double the performance if I take it to i7-980

I don't want to go down the i7-2xxx route as that will require another motherboard as well.

You won't see double performance in "day to day" usage (only in some forms of video encoding really), refer to:

Regardless of whether they are making more cpu's for your mobo chipset and socket I think your i7 920 is perfectly fast enough right now and going to be fine for a year or two more easily.

Unless you go really low end on the cpu (which you didn't) it's just not good bang for buck to upgrade the cpu only and not yet.

I suspect if there is a bottleneck on your current system it's in disk performance, have you looked at SSD's, raided SSD's, more ram.. ?
