I noticed a retailer offering this deal, however I can't find anyone selling just the OEM software that will qualify for this. Anyone know if buying OEM windows pro software when building your own PC would qualify for this deal?

I still haven't managed to get a conclusive answer from PC retailers on this. One said I needed to buy a prebuilt PC, which they had to preinstall the OS on. Another said it can apply a cusom built PC, but all the components have to be purhased from the same retailer,and just to keep the receipt. Another said you need to get a special voucher with the OS. Really confusing, and MS's own FAQs on their windows 8 upgrade website at http://windowsupgradeoffer.com/ doesn't have any mention of this. Apprently on the MS website, you need to buy a new PC within the promotional period with a valid windows 7 OEM COA. But it says windows 7 is to be 'preinstalled'.
I think I will be ok just to buy an OEM copy of windows along with all the computer components to build the new PC, as long as I can prove it, but it is a little difficult to be 100% sure.Perhaps they don't think consumers build their own PCs these days.

However the consumer site does say you have to provide details of the retailer or manufacturer you purchased your new PC from, and combined with mention of "preinstalled" I would assume that you must actually buy a PC, and that you cannot just buy the parts.

Thanks. The preintalled thing is probably where microsoft would get you. However they wouldn't really know if it was preinstalled or not, as long as you can supply the invoice showing that the computer parts and OEM software was purchased at that particualr time. Apparently OEM versions of windows OS can only be sold with a new PC anyway.

Unless it meets these conditions, it would not qualify:

That's what the website says too... so I'd assume that flat out excludes purchasing the PC components and Windows 7 OEM and assembling it yourself?  That's my interpretation.... but you guys obvious know best ;)

Will the offer mentioned in the other, now locked, thread (upgrade for $40 if you're currently running XP\vista\W7) still apply or has the $20 offer only on "qualifying purchases" replaced it?

I am just wondering about how much checking is done. I do qualify as I purchased a new PC within that period with windows Pro. But filling in the form, you don't really have to fill in too much, to identify that you did infact purchase a PC, and between the dates specified . Apparently mine has now been approved. Perhaps they are relying on peoples honesty, or perhaps there is further checking done later one.

I believe that Microsoft still intends to make the other offer available once Windows 8 is released to consumers.

I see MS NZ are showing the $19.99 NZD upgrade for Windows 7 PC's purchased between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013:

But no mention of the 'cheap' $40-$50 general upgrade from XP, Vista, 7 (prior to 2nd June 2012).

Stuff.co.nz mentioned a $49.99 offering for the upgrade today but quickly amended their article. PC World NZ also mentioned something similar back in July:

The upgrade offer for existing XP, and 7 users to Windows 8 Professional with Media Center key is coming to New Zealand at launch

we don't have anything to announce quite yet on pricing though.  The US price has been announced as US$39.99
