Place your bets now ladies & gents: What are the odds that existing WinPho7 devices will be upgradeable to WinPho8? Bonus question: if so, will it cost?

First gen (Trophy, Omnia 7 etc) I don't reckon theyll be upgraded at all
Second gen (Lumias and stuff) have a chance, depends how much different WP8 will be and the effort manufacturers put into a possible update. I assume it will be much like developing software for a new phone?

Sucks for Lumia owners, you're going to be the laughing stock of the mobile world if you don't get updated at all

I think Nokia and Microsoft will be the laughing stock when my next phone is not a Windows one.

Problem is, there's not much different under the bonnet between the gen 7 & gen7.5 phones.

There was talk about a low-spec version of wp7.5 for cheaper phones. We may well find the second tier version of wp8 will run on the older handsets, but the premium version hardware spec will require multi-processors to run.

the original iphones cant be upgraded to the latest IOS. a lot of android devices struggle to get updated at all.

one would hope that the nokia and other second gen win phones were upgradeable, but should the first gen phones be upgradeable - perhaps they might only be able to run the 'lite' version of wp8 in the future?

how long is the expected life of a smartphone anyway? 1yr, 2yrs, 3yrs? Telco's would suggest that its 18 months/2 years given contract re-sign options.

No, no, no, yes.

I still think the Lumia 900/800 will get Windows Phone 8 in maybe a reduced operational capacity, but it'll be pretty exciting for a few people.. mainly Nokia Lumia 900/800 owners. Laughing

The old advert, "You've been Tango'd" springs to mind.  Laughing
