Does anyone else have issues syncing a gmail account on WP7? I have it set to manually sync, and when I hit the sync button it says its syncing, and sometimes even tells how many messages its syncing, but it doesn't sync. After I push sync again, sometimes up to 4 or 5 times, it will eventually sync properly. Its not the end of the world, but is a bit of a PITA. I got hopeful a few updates back, one of them said it was fixing a gmail sync issue, but it didn't fix mine. HTC Trophy, if hardware makes a difference. I have noticed it happening on at least one other Trophy as well, but it was a while ago, and I don't have access to the phone or user anymore.

I found similar issues in old Windows Mobile 6.5 devices when using a Google Account via ActiveSync. I think Google hasn't put much effort into making their services accessible through third party frameworks. Conspiracy theorists would even go as far as say "it's intentional". I wouldn't be surprised - Gmail sync works perfectly every time on my iPod Touch. I'm pretty sure it would be more-or-less flawless on an Android. But MS & Google aren't best buddies, so I suppose there's no incentive for either side to make the other look good. Although it would do MS more good to have Gmail running seamlessly on WP7 than it would Google.

Even if Microsoft makes the best client in the world, it won't work well if the server on the other side is not exactly playing ball. freitasm: Even if Microsoft makes the best client in the world, it won't work well if the server on the other side is not exactly playing ball. But then Google would have to be differentiating at their end between WP7, iOS and Droid. iOS doesn't have the same problem, so unless Google have given them a privileged connection (which would be a real dick move), its probably a WP7 problem.

Nope. Google implemented ActiveSync - these are only used by Windows Phone and Windows Mobile (or others if you configure as AS instead of native). Perhaps the iPhone uses some other protocol instead. I had problems with Google apps before - sync not showing all emails, emails not sending, etc. Google apps are in my opinion notoriously bad for anything related to ActiveSync. Google terrible support (no reply to a paid customer, contacted me after I posted in my blog, monitored my connection but never came back with a solution) made me move to Office 365. I don't use the native Gmail account setup anymore on my Windows Phone device. I have set my gmail account to forward all emails to my Hotmail account which is my primary inbox anyways and that shows up fine all the time without any issues on Windows Phone.
