Topic # 64229 11-Jul-2010 14:32 Send private message

Hi.  I have a near new HTC Touch 2 running Windows Mobile 6.5.  On the 'Today' page there is a portion showing current weather in a named location. That location does not seem to keep up with my actual location. It is currently showing a location in Canada where I was two weeks ago. I am back in my regular location, Wellington NZ. There does not appear to be a setting to change to expedite this and it happens regularly. I have had several on-line conversations with the HTC Support people in Oz.  They led me through a particular fix that didn't work, then told me to do a hard reset.  This seems to be a common answer to a lot of problems.  Having done a couple of these, in the past, they seem to produce more issues than they solve.  In fact, this very issue is likely to have benn one prodeuced by a hard reset.  I have connected for long periods to both the internet via the cellular connection and wifi, to see if it made a difference.  It didn't.  Any ideas how to sort this.   Cheers

Have you changed the time zone in the clock?

Hi, Maurice. Yes, I have (back to Wellington, NZ). On the weather page, although there is room for more than one location, I only have Wellington NZ entered, in case that was causing the problem. Cheers.

The first location on the weather page (which is also the one shown on the home screen) is automagically determined from cell site info (+/- GPS).  It should update automatically, although I've found occasionally it does take a little while (but certainly not weeks) to update.

There is a workaround, though - you can disable the automagic location-aware weather by editing the registry - set HKCU/software/htc/manila/Weather.EnableCurrentLocation to 0. You can then set your location manually - the home page picks up on the first entry that you set on the weather page.

Doesn't solve the problem of it failing to update, mind you.

Hi, Damager. Thanks. Yes, I have.

Hi, Kevin. That sounds a logical thing to try. However, I cannot find the folder(s) you have itemised, so don't quite know where to start. Can you give me a step-by-step? Cheers.

Another thing that was left out completely: what network are you using? You might get it updated on Telecom, but not sure it would update on Vodafone or 2degrees while on Vodafone cell sites.

As for the "folders" those are registry keys. You will need a registry editor to change that. IF you do it, remember if you always have to be careful with registry.

Hi, Maurice. It's on the T'Com network. There's no shortage of towers around me and I have certainly travelled near some since I left Canada!

I'm happy to try and modify the registry just need to know where and how to do it. Cheers.

You need to install a registry editor e.g. PHM Registry Editor (http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/phmregistryeditor.shtml).

Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\htc\manila\ and edit the field "Weather.EnableCurrentLocation" from 1 to 0. Soft reset (or unload/reload manila) and the automatic weather entry should be gone.

Hi,Kevin.

On this phone the folder / file appears to be called Weather.CurLocInfoEng. the values begin DA 07 07 000.... and end with a truckload of 00 00 00, etc. Where to from here? Cheers.

No, that's the wrong field. You want the one called "Weather.EnableCurrentLocation". If it's not there, then you have a different version of manila than I have.

Hi,Kevin. I have searched evry folder / file under My Device for any file containing 'Weather'. I found a few, but not the one you're after. Anything else I can do? Cheers.

It's not a file or folder - it is a value in a registry key. You looked like you were on the right track initially - the Weather.CurLocInfoEng value is a few entries above the one you are after. Perhaps if you're not sure what you are doing, you probably shouldn't be messing around in the registry.

You could check to see the HTC location service is enabled - it should be on the settings page in HTC Sense/Manila or in the system settings in your control panel.

The only other thing I can think of is tapping on the clock icon in the home page to make sure you haven't set a default alternative city in the world clock. It should have only one entry by default - "My location".  You could also try setting a custom city in the world clock and making it active as another workaround.

The problem is that there are so many different variants on the HTC software it is difficult to pin down what your problem is or how to fix it. Disabling the automatic update would fix it, but you have to edit the correct value as described earlier.

Hi, Kevin.

Working from bottom to top of your answers; Tapped on clock. Location is shown as 'GMT +12 hours New Zealand' There is no 'My Location' entry.

The Location Service setting is enabled.

I used the wrong terminology. I found the entry Weather.CurLocInfoEng . However, there are no sub entries under Manila. I searched for all other Registry Keys containing 'Weather' to no avail.

There are quite a few 'weather' type entries under HKLM, but not the one specified.

Any other suggestions?

Is there a chance I can use the registry to sort myother issue Topic # 64231?

What's the first entry in the weather tab in HTC Sense?

The entry you want is in HKCU, not HKLM - not sure why it wouldn't be there.

Have you tried turning it off and on again? (to channel The IT Crowd)

Your other issue is a bit more complex - you can try using the registry editor to change HKCU/Software/HTC/Manila "DefaultBrowserIsIE" from 0 to 1 - if that doesn't work, you have to edit the xml files for manila which is another degree of complexity.

Mobile opera's a great browser! Not sure why you'd want to change it lol

If you tap Settings | System |Clocks Alarms do you have an option "Sync to current time zone"? I have it on my Windows Mobile device...
