We have a dozen or so HTC Trophy users around the business, all on Vodafone. Most of them, including me, have encountered a problem with the phone reporting a SIM error and not making or receiving calls, texts or email syncing. Restarting the phone fixes the issue, but as it can take an hour or two to notice, users can miss quite a few calls and texts.

The problem seems to be more frequent on phones that have the Mango update. It is intermittant, it doesn't usually happen more than once a day, and can be up to a fortnite between occurrances. Its not limited to an area - its happened to me both in Hamilton and in Auckland.

I haven't seen any mention of it online from other Trophy users, and our Vodafone rep hadn't heard of anything - all he could recommend was a SIM swap, which seems an unlikely fix for a problem affecting most of our Trophy users, and none of our other smartphone users.

Can you tell what's the exact error message? Where does it show - in a box on top of the screen? Which options are offered?

Maybe the latest handset software version does not like the SIM2 applet for Localzone on 256k SIMs

Localzone has now been decommissioned and has been removed from new SIM cards that are now 128k,

You could try a new SIM on one handset and see if that helps!

It doesn't give an error message as such. The phone tile gets a cross through it and the messaging tile shows a frowny face instead of a smily. When you tap into the phone tile, at the top of the screen it says Invalid SIM, emergency calls only. Incoming calls go to vm, and txts backlog. You only tend to notice it when you go to send a text or make a call.

There are a variety of SIMs in use in tha various phones - mine was a VF prepay that got converted to on account, some are old Telstra-Clear SIMs that got migrated to VF when we changed providers, others are standard VF SIMs. This makes me think its less likely to be a SIM issue, but if it still sounds like it could be due to SIM apps or whatever, I can get VF to try the SIM swap.

I have one in my hand right now. It hasn't been Mangoed. Phone tile says Emergency only. Tapping into phone tile saysd Invalid SIM - Emergency calls only. Trying to make a call give more detailed error "SIM error.
The SIM card is missing or invalid. You can still make emergency calls if your service provider supports it."
SIM is an old TelstraClear one.
I'm about to install the updates on it to Mangoise it and bring it fully up to date.

Sounds like this SIM is not active so this would happen

But when we restart the phone, it works fine, until next time it seizes up. And the majority of our Trophy users have this problem to varying degrees, but not other phones, including WinMo 6.x smartphones. We've had a couple of Samsung Omnia 7s arrive in the past week, so I'm watching to see if they exhibit the same problem, that will at least tell me if its a WinPho7 issue or a specifically Trophy thing.

I contacted @vodafoneNZ on Twitter, and they kindly organized a new SIM for me. I think the problem dissipated a little while after the Mango update.

The problem appears to have gone away completely now. I haven't encountered it in several weeks, and no other user has reported it happening to them. No changes at our end, so I'm assuming something got fixed at Vodafone's end.

I have had an ex-Vodafone htc trophy running with 2degrees for around a year and I've never encountered this issue. but statistically that is insignificant :P

I have an HTC Trophy that fails on any Vodafone SIM card we tried. Figured the phone was faulty but might try with an alternative SIM card after reading this.
