Topic # 112571 13-Dec-2012 00:39 Send private message

I've had some freezes with my phone and I'm wondering whether I should take it back to Harvey Norman to get a replacement or whether the issue is related to software itself and thus should I just 'hold out' till a fix is delivered.  I've pretty much stripped the phone down to the Windows Phone 8 bare installation and still I find that I get freezes just doing basic things - I scrolled through my music collection then suddenly it freezes up. The strange thing is though it isn't happening 4-5 times a day but once every 2-3 days which leads me to wonder whether the software is just buggy and thus if I do take it back I'll just get another phone with the same issue.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

1. how many songs are there?
2. what format?

(i also think this should be posted on the Lumia 920 thread)

Around 1000 songs, the freeze occurred when I was scrolling through the albums which was only around 10 or so of them. It has also occurred when using Internet Explorer etc. I really cannot nail it down to one thing that can be repeated and the same result each time.

As for posting it in the 920 thread, I was but I then thought it would end up getting lost in a massive thread and thus it never being addressed by anyone.

Have you just uninstalled apps or reset the phone?

I've done both.

What form does the 'freezing take'? Does it stop for a few seconds and then continue or does it fully lockup and only a reboot will clear it? Are you always doing something on the device and it freezes, or do you sometimes come back to it after a while and find it frozen?

If it is spontaneously rebooting, then Microsoft has just begun rolling out a OTA patch for this, it's called the Portico update.

Otherwise, I suspect you'd need to trace it to something reproducible, in which case maybe some sort of 'gradual reinstatement of functionality' process might help:
  1. Start with a clean slate (reset to factory defaults)
  2. Turn off all background tasks and non-cellular wireless connections (Wifi, bluetooth, nfc)
  3. If stable for a couple of days, only install things gradually (core apps you can't live without only), but I'd still disable all background tasks for even these apps at this stage
  4. If stable for a couple of days, begin adding a couple of accounts (email, twitter, facebook)
  5. If stable for a couple of days, start adding important apps (again, turn off background tasks)
  6. If stable for a couple of days, add Microsoft Account
  7. Then start adding things like WiFi, turn on background tasks for your critical apps, etc

You get the idea.  I suspect we'll fine-tune this process for others as this is a new OS and new device.

In case it helps, for the record the firmware on mine is:
  • OS version 8.0.9903.10
  • Firmware revision 1232.2109.1242.1005
  • Radio software 1.0.202041.3
  • Chip SOC 8960
  • Running on Telecom Smartphone Network

I had one situation where it would freeze and then come back to life but most of the time it was freezing and then it would require a soft reset then suddenly ever thing is ok. As for how things are going - I've been pretty good for today and last night - I have but the bare basic installation which leads me to believe that the issue isn't related to hardware but software, maybe something hogging up the CPU resulting in the freezing of it. I also received a funny error saying that a mp3 wasn't supported but then I played it again without any problems. It will be interesting to see what happens when an update is pushed out hopefully soon by Nokia/Microsoft which hopefully will address some of the bugs I've come across. Anyway, I'll go 3-4 days and have no freezes so I guess things aren't too bad although I'd prefer there to be no freezes at all.

Regarding the firmware stats - mine are the same as yours.

not to worried, just software in its early days.
