not really. You can expect the mobo + components to last 5 years but in all honesty, a DVD drive can only last about 3 years. If your son has regularly used the dvd drive for 3 or 4 years then that is it. The laser does have a life. The more you use it, the crappier it will become. SepticSceptic: My son has an Xbox 360 with a dodgy DVD drive - it can take up to 10 reboots before any game disk is recognised and able to be played. Tried cleaning it with those DVD cleaner disks with the little brushes in it - helped a little bit - down to about 8 reboots. Not limited to any particular game disk. Is this repairable ? perhaps also covered in the CGA ? be gentle, I'm a n00b on the console stuff .... Hi you get 1 year warranty for all faults and an extended three year warranty for the red rings. If you have proof of purchase etc and the console hasnt been opened/modified then you can force your consoel to get red rings, then send it back for repair and also state dvd drive has issues. That is a bit dodgy so I wont go into details of how to do that. Otherwise if interested I can do a POTS calibration on the dvd drive which increases the power of the laser and can help fix this sort of issue. 40$ if interested. PM me.

Hi, Please go into more details regarding "solder reflow and reset process" Do you have the propper device which cost's thousands of dollers to do this, or are you just using a heatgun / hair dryer and heating up the motherboard? If you have got the propper machine, do you have a workshop where we can come to you, to have a look etc, how long approx does it take to "solder reflow and reset process" And how much just for the above service on the xbox mainboard, already disembled ready to go for you, I can do the Artic Silver 5 etc myself no worries, Cheers, Scott

A hairdryer! lol, good luck with that one. You can do some amazing things with a proper hot air reflow unit if used properly, Try replacing a BGA1 chip, now that's fun! took a few practice runs but I got a great result in the end. Yes DVD drives often go bad but often it's more that they have simply got dusty internals with old age and dusty DVD's or have been bumped out of alignment, most of the lasers should last a very very long time. the most common cause are the drive motors than cause sudden total failures or a large bump when they are running. You can often fix them for at least a bit by opening, cleaning the gunk off the spindles and then veray carefully cleaning the laser assembly and lens, if done wrong, the dust will simply ruin it completely. Sometimes the results will be perfect, I ripped my entire CD collection with excellent results this weekend with my old CD burner from 2002 that I just cleaned and re-oiled. 1 Ball Grid Array, when you see a small flat chip with no little pins sticking out the sides.

What would be best for a "solder reflow" doing the heat gun or the overheat method I think the overheat (no fans till 2rrod) would be best as a first try as the protection systems on the xbox are protecting it from over-temping and the heat is focused where you need it only (around the CPU/GPU) The heat gun would be good as a second option maybe if the first didn't work. I'ld be concerned about overheating the components to destruction though. Thoughts? Or you could just do the "Towel Trick" lol (DISCLAMER: don't do the "towel trick" you'll burn your house down and look like an idiot!)

Hello. My 360 just RROD'ed... and since it's been modded, I'm guessing it could be out of warranty(!). Can anyone recommend a decent, Auckland-based RROD repairer [besides KDN? Have emailed him already, but no reply]. Cheers in advance.

After approximately a year, my 360 got the RROD. I have had it flashed so I could play backups, and obviously the warranty sticker was well gone. Decided to send it to the repair centre anyway. Knowing my warranty was voided, I just thought I would try my luck anyway. So I sent it in on the 12th October. Received email last week saying that they had repaired the console and it was on it's way back to me. Guess they don't seem to care about the warranty sticker missing. Anyway, Courier just arrived this morning and the note attached says they have given me a replacement console instead of repairing my one. So I thought to myself that would mean my 360 backups would not work on the new original firmware console. Put one of my backups in, and to my surprise the game loaded fine. Even tried another game to make sure and that ran fine also.

From my time in retail, this does not surprise me. Sony and Microsoft will quite often repair their consoles under warranty, even if they have been modded. HOWEVER, the mod must not have been the cause of the fault, and its a hard mod, then you will not get your hardware back.

Hey xboxers.... just thought I'd let y'all know. Got my modded, out-of-warranty Xbox 360 fixed. $100 from this dude in Papakura. (021) 337773. He gave good advice [sell my 06 model now, mod an 08 model]. But I'll prolly just try my luck, n keep using it. No guarantees for how long it'll work tho. Anywhoz
