I'm having a couple of issues with my PS3 which some people may be able to advise me on.

1. It won't read DVDs, Blu-ray and and PS3 games are fine but any time I put in a DVD the screen goes black and the system locks up.

2. If I turn the system off with a game disk in it then it won't detect the disk when it it switched back on, the disk has to be ejected and inserted again.

Since this has started happening I have reset the PS3, installed the latest system software and reset it again but no luck.

Any ideas?

Sounds like issues with the laser? possibly due to the CD/DVD laser wearing rather than the Bluray laser.

I was getting pretty much the same results with mine, but the other way round.. Blurays weren't working - locking up the system, and on restart wouldn't show the disc unless i ejected and re-inserted.. but DVDs worked perfectly..

How old is your unit? (Model) and did you get extended warranty? is it still under warranty?

I would suggest it needs a repair.

Anyone else?

I would be very surprised if it due to wear since I have barely used the PS3 and don't think I've actualy ever put a DVD into it. All I've ever really done is play GTA IV and NHL 09 on it.

It is a 40Gb model I got in May 08.

The 40gb models are well known for laser failures, much more so than other models. It definately sounds like there is a fault with the laser. You can source a replacement from the US for around $80NZ inc shipping.

No, I didn't get the extended warranty but given the succes others have had in taking Sony and the retailer to the disputes tribunal, I will do that if DSE don't play nice
