No one on GZ that into the Wii U from what I can tell...

It snuck up on me a bit, but in the last week or so I have looked into it a bit more and I'm going to keep up my habit of purchasing nintendo's console at launch.

Deluxe black version looks the goer, extra hard disk space and a stand is good, but simply because it comes with the nintendo land game (which would be $85 on its own) which you will need to demonstrate to friends and family what Wii U is all about.
Most retailers have upped the competition in the last few days the deals are at around $570 for deluxe (inc nintendo land) plus another game.

Just have to track down a midnight opening!

lots of complaints about the update you have to do when you run it for the first time. It seems it is a 5 GB file and if for any reason your update is interrupted, eg power cut, the WI turns into a brick and you cant fix it.

Yep, got it. It's great!
System update was fine since I had to go out for dinner and it was ready when I got back. You don't have to update before playing games anyway, it's just for the online stuff.
but then each game seems to need its own update too, though if you skip it you can play on while it downloads in the background.
Overall impression: it is a big jump from the Wii, but not a big jump from xbox... it needs willing multi player participants for you to get the real benefits (fun).
I'm worried about what the new xbox and ps versions might do to Nintendo, along with the ouya threat.
But you can't define a console by it's launch, it will always come down to the games. And Nintendo has always made fun games.

Yeah, I think the multiplayer mindshare is a fairly significant issue these days. Hard to go past Xbox Live Gold really (although, you have to pay extra for the experience).

I don't know if pushing so hard to deliver the CoDBO2 port was such a great idea to be honest. I'd question whether much (if any) of it was optimized for Wii U. People see the bad port and then assume it's a rubbish piece of hardware.
From what I've read it sounds like that port was simply shocking.

I'm not so sure Sony will play the loss-leader game so heavily this time around. They're basically haemorrhaging money, so I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if they did the same with the PS4 (their funeral if it tanks though).
Microsoft has deep enough pockets that it doesn't matter so much.
It's a tough time to be entering the console market. Even the Wii U is a loss leader.
I just don't know about Ouya to be honest. Would definitely be popular as an affordable HTPC I'd imagine.

Agreed.

It shouldn't take long for devs to get up to reasonable speed with the Wii U. The programming paradigm is apparently very similar to the Wii, albeit now with multiple cores (which is tricky, but, the expertise should be readily available by now thanks to the PS3/360).

Played one in Bond and Bond Queen Street, Auckland today.

Looked good on a 50" HD LCD.  Remote felt fine, not too big, not too heavy.  Played Super Mario Bros, couldnt figue out if there was anything special to do with the remote screen (it mirrored what was on the Telly).  Could definately be interested in one of these...

Checked out one at Noel Leeming. Only had Nintendo Land running (they'd just set it up).

Remote felt okay, lighter than I'd expected (good thing). Would've like to have seen SMB running. The HD graphics looked nice. Would also be interested, but, waiting to see what future titles look like (although, SMB would be an almost automatic selection).
