Topic # 17784 11-Dec-2007 15:56 Send private message

I've just bought a Linksys PAP2T in preparation for naked dsl.
Rang Xnet, got it all set up on their end, Just waiting for them to do their thing.
When naked dsl is released, I'll port my current land line number to vfx.

I was wondering, do I need to forward any ports to the PAP2T so xnet can get in and configure it? If so, which ones?
I can't get into the admin login, so I'm assuming they will need to, but If my firewall doesn't let them in they wont get far.

Also, not being able to go into the admin login, how can I configure the second phone line, and change the voice codec?
Cheers.

Lorenceo: I was wondering, do I need to forward any ports to the PAP2T so xnet can get in and configure it? If so, which ones?

Usually you don't need to Forward any Ports in your router because VFX uses NAT Traversal technigues which make this unnecessary.  I have never needed to forward any ports with PAP2T, SPA2102 or WRTP54G.

If you can't get into the Admin. Login, then it sounds like everything is correct awaiting VFX to download their Profile to your PAP2T.  If you just have a standard router with NAT, rather than any fancy firewall, everything should work fine.  However, if you have some elaborate hardware firewall, it may need some special configuration which I can't help you with Embarassed

Lorenceo: Also, not being able to go into the admin login, how can I configure the second phone line, and change the voice codec?

Once the VFX profile is downloaded, Line 2 will be unlocked and you will be able to configure everything as you like Smile

If for some reason, the VFX profile doesn't get downloaded and Line 1 LED doesn't come on, you may need to do a Factory Reset.  If so, let me know and I (or someone else) can post the instructions on how to do that.

I would think it should be active within 24h.  I have heared of a few instances (and had it myself) whereby they got the MAC address wrong.  In my case I filled in the application form and checked that I got it right, but when they phoned me to get my details (exactly the same details as what I filled in, that was a bit annoying) they must have gotten it wrong and it took a help desk request to get it right.  In the 8 months of dealing with them I have to say that is the only thing I got annoyed with.  You fill in the application form, but then they still phone you and ask you the exact same questions.  Other than that, a great company to deal with and I am sure they will sort it out for you.

It all seems to be working. Will test it out properly tonight calling family.

I did some speed tests from the xnet website while on the vfx, to see if the QoS in my router was working. QoS worked well, no skipping on the voice, but later when I updated my usage monitor, it said I'd done 20MB national data instead of local.
I think the vfx data is counting as local, but the data from the xnet speedtest sure isnt. Not sure whats going on there.

Any chance you are running Skype?  It uses bandwidth whenever it is loaded even when not in use.

I would not be a happy chappy if the XNet speed test data was counted as national instead of local, since it runs inside the WxV web site and does not divert to a different web site.  WxC, please comment.

Nope, Skype isn't installed on any of my computers.
The speedtest data came from an Xnet IP too - ip-58-28-13-209.wxnz.net (58.28.13.209)

I've been going through the settings in the PAP2T,and it seems I can't change the voice codec on the vfx line.
I'd like to put it on G729a, as it doesn't seem to use much bandwidth, about 30kbps, which is fine with me.
Most calls seem to be G729a, to land lines at least, but during a call to a mobile, the codec changed to G711u, and the bandwidth in use jumped to about 80kbps. This isn't good for me, as I only have 128k upload at the moment.

Another thing I've found, is that if numbers aren't dialed fast enough, the system tries to call whatever has been dialed, even if it is just the area code, which leads to an error. I have no idea how to stop it from doing this.

By default you will find your calls will be on G729, however there are occassions where G729 is not acceptable for termination and the devices re negotiate an acceptable one , in this case I think you will find you are calling an 021 Mobile, this is because Vodafone do not accept G729 through our interconnects.

There is what they call an Interdigit Timeout and it is set at 3 secs, this means that after 3 secs if no key is pressed the call is sent , this is not a changeable option by default
