Topic # 18671 19-Jan-2008 00:19 Send private message

I've just recently picked up a pre-configured PAP2T and connected to the Xnet VFX service.

Most of the time it works really well, however intermittently the PAP2T line 1 light has been turning off, no dial tone, and showing "can't connect to login server" error.  So far its occured once daily, usually in the early evening (around 8pm).

I sent the helpdesk an email last night, but so far haven't heard back from WxC.   (little disappointed to find only 8-8pm support)

Has anyone experianced this and know of a fix??

To get the device to re-connect on both occassions I've needed to restart my Router.   The first couple of times I was using my DLink DSL-504G.   Today I changed to an older Nokia M1122, however the same issue occured.

Any advise would be appreciated...    Was planning to go Naked ADSL however need to get this resolved first...

We do see this occassionaly and generally 95% of the time it's the router blocking the SIP traffic, the error "Can't connect to Logon server" means it's getting no reply, what I think you may find is that your device may be setup as DHCP and the router may be doing a renew of lease (Ie IP address to the device) every 24 hours, this could be the problem.

Try setting your device to a static IP address, make sure you also set the DNS entries as well, see how you go after that.

Thanks for the advise...

The internet connection remains up, just the PAP2T can't connect.  (PC's have no problem)

After the first issue I setup a fixed IP on the PAP2T, however hadn't set the DNS addresses.   I've set these now to the WxC DNS IP's and will see how it goes...

I've noticed on other posts that people comment that the manual says to allow certain ports, however I don't have a manual for the PAP2T and can't locate one on the web..  Just the quick start guide...

Some routers actually seem to have a problem with passing the SIP packets after a time out period.

For your DNS you can add in your router default gateway as one of them as well

Can you recommend a good reliable router?   Thinking of moving to Naked ADSL, so having the voip line up is fairly important...

I think it's best to get an all-in-one device so you won't have the problems you are currently having with SIP packets not being forwarded through the firewall etc.  Also, if you get a Linksys device, it has good QoS which is designed to work with VFX, thus preventing voice breakup when heavy network traffic is happening at the same time.

I suggest you have a look at the Linksys WAG54GP2V2:

Hadn't thought about QoS before I brought the PAP2T.   Downloading doesn't seem to affect it, just uploading, which should be sorted by moving to Fusion...

Good news is that it's now been on-line ever since I set the DNS entries... Fingers crossed it stays that way...   Cool

Yeah, uploading caused me the most problems as well, but more than likely that will be sorted by the FS Upload provided by Fusion, as you say.  I have a SPA2102 which often has 2 simultaneous phone calls happening and it works perfectly with a FS/FS Xnet connection and an old ADSL router that doesn't have any QoS.

The issue is still occuring intermittently.  It's usually early evening around 8-9pm, however have also experianced it at other times, and some days it doesn't occur at all.

Looking at my router logs about the same time the DSL line drops and reconnects.   My router has 3 reset options:  DSL, Soft and Full.  I've found that doing a soft or full reset on the router brings it back, restarting DSL only doesn't.

Does any one know why the DSL line drops and reconnects?   Is this the router/ISP renewing my external IP address?

So the modem also drops the line?  On which exchange are you, or which area do you live in? If your exchange is being upgraded to ADSL2+ that could be the problem and you will get it for about 6 weeks while they commission the equipment, stable after that.

Can you test it this way,

Have both devices on line and working, then disconnect your DSL for a minute , then reconnect your DSL see if the Device stays on line ,  check to see if your DSL changed IP as well, try this a couple of times and lets see what the results are.

What it appears to be is that the on a change of IP for your router on a soft reset is blocking NAT devices behind it, which router are you using at present ?

have a look at this
Type: scheduled

Subject: MyVFX Portal Changes - 22/01/08

Begin: 2008-01-22 05:30:00

End: 2008-02-05 05:30:00

Body:

WorldxChange is making a change to the way VFX customers log onto their Web Portal.

These changes are required in preparation for upcoming improvements to the VFX service, and will streamline the VFX provisioning process. However, there is an issue with customers that have short logon names. We require a VFX Logon ID with no less than 6 characters, but unfortunately some accounts were set up with only 3 to 5 characters. This means that if you have a VFX logon with 3 to 5 characters, you will not be able to logon to the new portal.

For any users that have these short logon IDs, your login will automatically be lengthened using the digit 1.

Example:

Current MyVFX logon ID: New MyVFX logon ID:

abc@xport.co.nz abc111@xport.co.nz

abcd@xport.co.nz abcd11@xport.co.nz

abcde@xport.co.nz abcde1@xport.co.nz

If you have any problems logging in after the change, please phone our Technical Support line on 0800 14 XNET (0800 14 96 38) and our team will assist you.

These changes will occur on the 22nd January 08 a redirect Web page will be in place for a couple of weeks, the only difference you will notice is the new look for the MyVFX Portal and you will now go directly into your MyVFX Screen.

this will help you guys  out

Sorry this has got nothing to do with the actual device communications , It is related to the new Web portal where you control your  VFX Services from,

I kind of know that since I wrote it Wink

I experimented as suggested:

NOKIA M1122, firmware: Gx1x2230.R04

Start Router                            IP address 118.90.46.45;     PAP2T Online
Disconnect, reconnect DSL.     IP address 118.90.46.165;   PAP2T Can't connect to login server

Warm start router.                  IP address 118.90.47.60;     PAP2T Online
Disconnect, reconnect DSL.     IP address 118.90.47.186;   PAP2T Can't connect to login server

Warm start router.                  IP address 118.90.48.22;     PAP2T Online
Disconnect, reconnect DSL.     IP address 118.90.48.96;     PAP2T Can't connect to login server

Warm start router.                  IP address 118.90.50.20;     PAP2T Online
Disconnect, reconnect DSL.     IP address 118.90.50.78;     PAP2T Can't connect to login server

Full restart router.                   IP address  118.90.50.204;  PAP2T Online
Disconnect, reconnect DSL.     IP address 118.90.51.40;     PAP2T Can't connect to login server

Then I tried my DLink DSL-504G with the NZ firmware R2.01B21NZ and it also failed the same as the Nokia...

However I loaded the Australian firmware after confirming it was safe to do so with DLink tech support and:

DLink DSL-504G, firmware: R2.01.B25.AU(030917a/Y1.21.1)

Start Router                           IP address 118.90.51.120;    PAP2T Online
Disconnect, reconnect DSL.    IP address 118.90.51.255;    PAP2T Online
Disconnect, reconnect DSL.    IP address 118.90.52.151;    PAP2T Online

The only noticable difference between the two firmware's is that the Australian firmware takes 2 minutes after IP and DNS info before the interface comes up, whereas the NZ firmware comes up almost immediately...

Sun Jan 27 12:48:21 2008 : STATUS ALARM: PPP Authorization Successful : Interface - ppp-0
Sun Jan 27 12:48:21 2008 : STATUS ALARM: PPP Event: NCP Got IP address: 118.90.52.151
Sun Jan 27 12:48:21 2008 : STATUS ALARM: PPP Event: NCP Got primary DNS address: 58.28.4.2
Sun Jan 27 12:48:21 2008 : STATUS ALARM: PPP Event: NCP Got secondary DNS address: 58.28.6.2
Sun Jan 27 12:50:26 2008 : STATUS ALARM : PPP Interface Up : Interface - ppp-0

I can live with this minor delay....   So I'll leave the DLink connected with the Australian firmware and see how it goes, looks promising though...

Yep was pretty much as I thought , the device itself on assigning a new IP from a warm restart or disconnect / connect is blocking the traffic that runs the natting. so will be interseted in how you go now,
