marmel: A bit off topic but can anyone tell me if you are building a new house would it be wise to lay some fibre cable from the telecom box to the house in addition to the standard phone cable? If so where does one get the cable from?

Have a read of this to understand what the telco industry is working to:

http://www.tcf.org.nz/library/e72d1374-8040-4022-ba79-428d56eb4a9b.cmr

I would'nt put any fibre down - not worth it, and the SP will usually do it for you. The cost will come in the ducting and drawstrings - so put down 100mm ducting (call Downer EDI, Totaltelco in Wlg etc and ask for specs). That's where the cost and hassle almost always is - digging a trench 450mm down in a straight line, then repairing the damage.

Do that, then wait for when fibre goes past. Or copper. Or HFC if you're in welly or chc Smile

Its abit disappointing that you don't have fibre to your house..

Although in saying that alot of Whitby (Wellington) has Telecom's fibre to the house (part of the roll out of the old Telecom Cable TV service) although i'm not sure what Telecoms stance with that is now - maybe they should do something with it.. would be nice :)

It's not actually fibre to the house, it's only coax. The First Media rollout was a similair network structure to TelstraClear's HFC network but I believe all their coax actually originated from Telecom exchanges rather than node end cabinets.
