Topic # 105320 2-Jul-2012 15:07 Send private message

Hi Folks,
Am planning to deploy Wifi in a public building to offer paid voucher/credit card access to visitors over our exisiting Cisco AP infrastructure. Would also like to let staff use it also so possible integration with active directory might be cool.

Have been playing with Antamedia Hotspot and Firstspot for the last few days and both seem to do what we want.

Trawling the net for reviews and experiences for both packages has left me with mixed opinons, I found some old threads on Geekzone too so thought I would ask here for anyone in the industry to respond with their opinions.

Much appreciated

Paul

What is the problem with Tomizone or Zenbu Wireless?

We need to use our own exisiting Cisco access points, there are already several hundred of them deployed across several sites so we want to offer the Public internet access as an additional SSID alongside what we already provide, not deploy new routers.

Zenbu and Tomizone as far as I know provide firmware for a compataible range of routers but theyre not exactly enterprise standard routers so not something we can use.

Hmm. Now we know a bit more of the requirements.

Zenbu provide their own router, but it has got LAN ports, so you could use the router and cable it into your network.

Yeah have been in touch with Zenbu as I've used their system in backpackers before and thought it was good, they don't reckon it would be suitable for our requirements.

For future reference for anyone here looking for enterprise hotspot solutions here is an option that we're probably going to go with:

We are the creator of FirstSpot. One simple way to ease your evaluation is for us to issue you a full feature license key. Just drop us an email at [email protected] and we will issue you a test license key.

Thanks.

Back on this... I have just received a Meraki MR16 AP for testing and it does support vouchers in some of its configurations. You could contact the New Zealand distributors at http://snappernet.co.nz.

+1 for firstspot

Antamedia is buggy and unstable, and i have to reinstall it at a few motels about every 12 months.
I used firstspot a few years ago and it was awesome.

Only downside to why i didnt purchase it was because it supports multiple subnets, but i ended up using a chilispot solution because my hotspots are not backhauled to a central point where a firstspot box can be located, before connecting to the internet. I chose a radius (chilispot) solution with DD-WRT running at my hotspot sites because some are fed with a DSL connection.
