Modem received and installed. All seems to be OK so far. Performance is good, but lets see if it has improved the stability of the ADSL link.

Performance has been good and, most importantly, reliability has been increased. Looking at the admin interface, I see that the ADSL link has been dropped on occasion, but this has always been seamlessly re-established again. With my old Netgear DGN3500, manual intervention was always required. Here are the stats as they currently stand:- Actual ADSL performance seems to fluctuate a bit, with download speeds observed between 8Mbps to 17Mbps. I suspect that is more to do with the input rather than the device itself.

Currently you appear to have the router set up "normally". The primary reason to use a Vigor 120 is so that you can set it into PPPoA Passthrough mode. This means that the is no longer accessible via the web interface, which doesn't appear to be how you have it set up. After enabling the PPPoA Passthrough you need to set the Extreme to PPPoE with the username/password details of your ISP. This means the Vigor obtains the dsl signal and all authentication/traffic is from the Extreme. Once set up correctly and connected to the internet the Airport Utility will show the Extreme with the ISP assigned IP address. HTH

I kept it at its "currently working" configuration, but suspected there was more to be done. I'll have a tinker this weekend and implement your suggested config changes. Once done, how do I then configure the Vigor in future, if it is no longer accessible via the web interface? Or did I misunderstand what you wrote?

DHCP is still enabled in the Vigor, so if you connect a PC directly you can check/change configuration. The PC just won't connect to the internet (unless of course you set the PC to PPPoE dialup).

dolsen: I was a bit surprised with the feel of the modem, quite light and feels (to me) like cheap plastic. Having said that, it's what inside that counts and all reports on that is that it's good. What is the advantage of running with this configuration? Considering you lose easy access to the admin interface, what exactly am I getting for this trade off?

What is the advantage of running with this configuration? Considering you lose easy access to the admin interface, what exactly am I getting for this trade off? The advantage of using the Vigor 120 in PPPoA passthrough mode is that you can have the connection controlled by a separate router with more processing power or features. With a lot of routers you can actually set up access to the web interface in the Vigor even when in passthrough mode- have your cake and eat it too.

I can assume I can do that without all the above taking place? I'm just reading through the documentation - I assume you hook up the modem, setup the necessary adsl settings, put the password/login in the Airport Extreme using PPPoE and the modem takes care of the PPPoE/PPPoA stuff?
