We have moved into a rental, and I am loathe to run ethernet (which we had before we sold our house). I am trying to configure the network for optimal throughput for video streaming, and would appreciate any thoughts before I spend the weekend re-configuring stuff.

I have two rooms.
Lounge has telstra cable and modem.
Room two is an office, close enough for a good wifi signal, but unable to run  ethernet to it.

I have an apple tv, which needs to be connected to the tv, which is next to the telstra cable.

I currently have an AEBS and Airport express (for n and g networks, which I require).

I run a NAS through an old emac which is in the office, and can't go in the lounge (noise size etc).

Currently the AEBS and Airport express are in the lounge, with the NAS (emac) connecting to the network the g wifi network.

I was wondering if a better option would be to connect the express to the telstra cable, and put the extreme in the office, with the NAS connected by ethernet.

It would seem at the moment that to stream to an n device (macbook or ipad), the NAS goes over the g netowkr is routed to the n network is then served. The g network being the bottleneck.

If I rearrange as mentioned the bottleneck will shift to being the WAN point through the G network.

Has anyone used their airport express like this, what are it's capabilities being a lead router with the extreme sitting behind it? Also putting the extreme further away from the tv, might reduce the throughput to the apple tv?

Yeah that was kinda what I had in mind. Bummer.

I might have to see if I can run some Cat6 in a non-destructive way, which doesn't look too ugly.

A tad expensive, but perhaps you could use some of the D-Link Powerline products?

I saw that conversation, and I think if I was going to spend money, a better option might be buy an new AEBS that does g/n simultaneous. Connect the NAS drives to the AEBS and use the eMac to just serve the itunes library (symlinked to the AFP shares).

That might be the way to go...
