I see a few people recommending the TP-Link TD-W8960N, but I notice that the TDW8950ND is a little cheaper at ascent, for the only real difference is that is has a "Basic Firewall"...

Long story short: my sister needs a new router for her naked broadband connection - What's the downside to the 8950? (Trying to save her a few pennies).

Also, I'm looking to replace my ageing AM300 (which admittedly does work fine still) with a full bridge capable device (primarily to get native IPV6). I'm eyeing up a cheap second hand RTA1320 on TM, but have also heard good things about the Draytek Vigor120.

Since I'm going to be using whatever I get in full bridge mode, are there any pros/cons to either of those?

The RTA1320, like the AM300, is only half-bridge.

I work for SnapperNet providing Tech Support for DrayTek modem/routers, Edge-core switches, Mobotix high-res IP cameras, QNAP network storage, Yeastar IP PBXs & more.
Anything I say is my own opinion and not necessarily that of Snapper Network Distributors

Hi, I have installed a number of both, they both have the same firewall functions, ie SPI, DoS, and the usual layer2/3 filtering/attack firewall features.

The big difference is ones a single chain 802.11n radio, the other is a dual chain, so has the potential of higher wireless speeds, which in most circumstances is never in reality acheived unless your right on top of the radio.

Both are good units, obviously the 8960 has a higher mip cpu, but hey its a ADSL2+ WAN on the end of it so lots of mips for basic NAT and SPI is not required.

I have a secondhand TD-W8960N that I've been considering putting on the offers forum\trademe. PM me if interested. (It worked great, but about a month after getting it I read up on Gargoyle and wanted to try that so replaced it with an RTA1320 + TPLink router with Gargoyle, so it hasn't had much use.  I was keeping it as a backup while on ADSL, but have now moved to VDSL)

Aha, that's a key bit of info I'd missed. thanks, the Vigor120 it is.

Thanks Cyril, seems like they'll both fit the bill well, I'll probably grab one of the 8950's then.

Yes the vigor120 does full PPPoA to PPPoE bridging, so effectively acts as a modem only, and your router its full public IP facing.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their ADSL broadband network faster. Why not spend a couple of hundred to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?
Geekzone special price: $150* for master splitter install, normally $200+ through your ISP. Auckland and Waikato areas.
*Travel charges may apply. Additional costs may apply for complex installs.
I install - Naked DSL, DSL Master Splitters, VoIP, RBI Rural Broadband. Also a dealer for WorldxChange.

Yep, largely the same as my current setup with an AM300 and WRT54G w/OpenWrt, but allowing me to get native IPv6 once I install the appropriate modules on the WRT.
