Topic # 107896 21-Aug-2012 21:03 Send private message

Hey guys

Need some help please.. So i just bought me a roku 2 xd. I want to be able to use net flix and other us channels. Now I understand that I will need to use a vpn. Can anyone recommend me a vpn? People say astrill vpn is good. So I am thinking about getting that.

But my problem is, the router i flashed dd-wrt to is not working properly (probably because i dont know how to set up!). So, all I have done is connect my telecom THOMSON ST5x6v6 to the router. The lan seems to work fine through router, so like the internet through on of the Ethernet ports. But when it comes to wifi, the internet just doesn't work :(

So I can connect to the wifi of the router, but there is no internet? Whats wrong do you think? I have reset to factory defaults and everything, nothing seems to help!

What do you think? Buy a new router and flash dd-wrt or just try fix this one? And could anyone recommend me a cheap router that can be flashed with dd-wrt and will easily work with dd-wrt?

My roku is coming on Thursday and I was hoping to have everythign setup.. Please help guys

Thanks in advance :)

Why not just unblock-us? The simplest method is to just use their DNS settings in your router.

The ddwrt thing seemed too technical for me so I just used unblock-us. With them all you need is to put their DNS server in your router without having to flash your hardware.

There are heaps of threads on this around... just do a quick search. I use a NZ credit card for both and trick with netflix is to add a digit to your current postcode.

I use unblock with a apple tv and netflix, hulu, itunes work fine.  Started with a vpn but decided I did not really need it.  The only thing you have to be aware of is if your external ip changes you need to go on to the unblock site to activate it.  Usually only happens if I power the modem/router off.  You will know if it has happened as netflix will stop working.

umm so i signed up to the trial. I went onto my router settings and changed my dns settings under internet setup> I have to choose connection type, mine is Dynamic IP (dhcp), is that correct or do i need to change it to something else? and under that i put in the 2 primary and secondary ip addresses.

I reset the router and went on netflix site. It just said netflix not avaliable in our country..

What am i doing wrong ? And one more question, how does un-block us know that i am on a trial? All i have done is change dns after i started trial. How does it know if some random changes dns with out buying or setting up a trial?

i am confused.. :(

It works on your external ip address.  Go to the unblock site and use the check service link at the top of the screen.  If it says all is ok and netflix is still not working try rebooting your pc.

I originally started out with a VPN (Astril), this worked very well but I was not able to achieve speeds over 4MB/s to the States, therefore could not watch any of the full high definition content. This was largely due to the performance of my DD-wrt router (Cisco WRT310N). You need something pretty fast to encode/decode all those packets.

I then signed up to unblock-us for the trial and now manage to stream movies from Vudu in full HD (HDX). Its a simple change of DNS settings on your router. I have since scrapped my VPN.

Unblock-us is really fast and its even possible for us to run 2 Netflix HD movies simultaneously, kids TV (with the Roku)/and PS3. No more fighting over Netflix :-)

I would go for the VPN if you going to be doing more than just streaming Netflix, Vudu, Hulu+ etc ...maybe torrenting. With the large amount of content that is available, I don’t see the need.

Could be a silly question, but make sure you reset the PC or Roku after u have rebooted the router. This will make sure that the PC or device is forced to get its new IP address and dns settings from dhcp.

Validate that your PC is getting the correct dns settings from dhcp. At command line, “ipconfig /all “ should do the trick. If they wrong, then the problem is with your router/dns settings. Make sure you PC does not have a static IP setup. Make sure you have not assigned an IP to your PC mac address on the router.

PS: What ISP you using? I seem to recall not all ISP’s were compatible due to some of them using transparent proxies.

I also recall a bug if you using unblock-us on a DD-WRT router. See here.

See this thread:

It may be that you need a static IP address from Telecom. But I'm unsure. Probably best to find out if there are other users out there running unblock-us with Telecom as their ISP.

As a test to make sure its working with your ISP, try manually assigning the DNS settings to your PC. If it works, then its not a problem with your ISP.

It looks like your pc is not getting the dns settings from the router.  You need to run ipconfig /all from a command prompt - all programs/accessories/command prompt (you are running windows?).  The other possibility is that you have different dns servers setup in dhcp on the router.

Edit:
There is a space between the ipconfig and the /all

Can you restore your router to it's original firmware?  Maybe something got screwed when it was flashed.
