I've tried the last 3 versions of the adapter, and am using the most recent at the moment, designated as Win 8.

I've turned it off and on quite a few times now :-)

Try setting the security to AES only (preferrable) or TKIP only.

Set it to AES, but still can't log in.

What is interesting is that if I put the wrong password in it knows its wrong, so there is some sort of connection.

Do you have any third party security software on this laptop?

Nope just pure win 8 just a stock install of work's Enterprise version.

The machine is only a week old, I bought it from Harvey Norman and immediately installed win 8 on it before installing anything else. Since then its only been Microsoft software installed on it.

Ok... And the laptop is configured to get network settings automatically, right?

What thi means is that when getting settings automatically it will get IP information from the router - the TelstraClear settings should be on the router only.

Also, how is the DHCP configured on the router? How many addresses are available for it to assign to new devices?

Yep the settings are obtaining the IP address and the DNS address automatically.
The router is set to enable the DHCP server and to have a max of 50 users. I bumped it up to 54 wondering if it was  consecutive users (maybe its the 50th user? ) but it made no difference.

Is it on a Homegroup? W8 sets this by default. If it is, remove it and use a Work network.

Have you tried setting the IP/gateway/DNS manually? That removes one variable (DHCP).

Not sure about homegroup. When you try to connect it asks if you want to turn on network sharing or not, neither option makes any difference. It says that there is no homegroup on the network under Network and Sharing.

I did set the IP/dns manually in the Adapter properties. I got 5 minutes of internet then it threw an error, and enabled DHCP and cleared out the fields. Reentering the numbers in failed to get a connection.

Around that time "Microsoft kernel Debug Network Adapter" popped into the Network adapters Devices.
I googled it and found that it needed to be disabled. So its now disabled.

There are 5 network adapters
2 Bluetooth
1 Broadcom Gigabit ethernet
a Disabled MS one above
and the Qualcomm Atheros ar5bwb222 Wireless network Adapter. Version 10.0.204

I have seen issues with Win7 where it sometimes will not get a DHCP lease if IPv6 is also enabled.

I don't know it that is still the case with Win8 but you could try unticking IPv6 under the network card properties.

Try this..

Go into the router and do a factory restore, then set the router up the same way it was before.

It should now work, sometimes we have this problem with our router and a factory restore gets it back in action.

If you decide to go that way make sure you have the IP configuration written down somewhere so you can configure the router correctly...

I had the same wireless adapter in my Acer S3 and it was a piece of s**t. I couldn't connect to any wireless networks without standing right next to the router.

I swapped out the adapter for an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 and it's heaps better. The only downside is that I lose bluetooth.

I have another Intel wireless adapter card if you want to swap out your one.

Tried that and no change. The other laptop, Dell is working OK with both IPv6 and IPv4 so the router can access it.

I notice the WiFi adapter shows "Not Connected" then when it tries to connect flashes "Disabled" then back to not connected again.

It works OK on the work Router, so I don't want to gut it and put a new adapter in, but I will try resetting the router later on.
