help, my problem is this:
i just went out and got a d-link DWA-110 usb wireles usb adapter, got home yesterday, installed it, and what do you know it worked perfectly.  so the comp i just pluged it into hadnt been on the net for some time, did an auto update, it included windows XP SP3 as it was only running XP SP2.
after the reboot from installing SP3 i cant use the net through the wifi, it conects and says its working, but i cant acess the network or the net. i used to see the other comps on the network and have access to them, but now nothing, i try click on "view workgroup computers" and get the msg: "MShome is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. the list of servers for this workgroup is currently unavailble."
any help would be great.thanks in advancejohn

Hi John, so if you get up a CMD prompt (command window) and type "IPCONFIG" whats the response. What I am trying to see is does the WiFi interface pickup a IP address from your AP/Route and associated gateway address. Oh and whats the WiFi AP in your network, presumably your ADSL modem with builtin WiFi AP, so whats its brand/model.

if you get up a CMD prompt (command window) and type "IPCONFIG" whats the response:
i get the following,
IP addy: 192.168.1.5
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Hi, ok so from the cmd prompt again, can you ping sites on the internet, ie

ping www.clear.net.nz

firstly does the IP resolve (ie DNS is ok) and then does it actually ping it.

i couldnt get a couple of machines to work reliably using wireless once i installed xp sp3- for some reason the compatibility seemed to get worse.  Especially when using WPA-PSK mode.

can you ping the gateway (router) on 192.168.1.1?

have you looked for a new wireless driver since upgrading to sp3?

perhaps you could try turning off security on the wireless AP and see if it works better?

probably best to go straight to the manufacturers site to get the latest drivers.  e.g. I have a us robotics pcmcia card so i go to www.usr.com and search on usr8054...

A couple of questions spring to mind...

  1. Are all computers set to use the same workgroup name,  ie HOME or  MYNETWORK or WORKGROUP

  2. After connecting "everything" up and switching on,  how long have you waited before trying to see whether computers can "see each other" on the network  (Windows can take a while to recognise network changes).

ok, thanks for the help guys,
I gave the comp another GB of ram and that has made a big difference on progress.
Also used the d-link software to conect this time rather than the widows zero wireless set up thing.
I turned the firewall off and on a few times, run the network wizard on both computers once more to triple check same workgroup.
It was working perfectly with the firewall turned off, and then all of a suden windows turned on the firewall (i dont know how/why?) and it is still working,

so hopefully i will shut it all done later on tonight and try again tomorrow to see if everything as it should be.

thanks again

John
