I would like some advice/knowledge with Modem/Routers. I'm needing a new modem and wireless router. whats everyone opinions on either going for individual devices i.e Adsl2 modem Modem + router ( you can pick up a cheap tplink adsl 2 modem for around $80) Or Router incl Modem. I'm tending towards the seperate units as then if i ever move into a cable area its easier/cheaper to just replace the modem. I'm after wireless N but which supports running b/g at the same time, as it seems some don't. And it seems easy to get a seperate Wireless N router then Wireless N combined with a modem. I already have a 8 port gigbit switch so don't necessarily need gigbit on the devies. I currently have a dynalink RTA1025w which im sick of, just started to cause no end of issues. I've done a fair bit of research and keep hitting brick walls with terms of stability, which is the key point to me, a lot of the routers/modems seem to have quite a few issues with them. I'm open to any suggestions, but wont be going with Dynalink again as their support is shocking.

It's surprising how few people have responded to this? Why the lack of opinion / info on good NZ ADSL modems and routers? Here's a whirlpool forums link you might find useful. I've just bought a WAG54G2 ADSL2+ router - so far, so good - even if I do keep pining for a WRT54GL, I was loathe to buy a separate modem - and for 1 desktop and laptop, the router is hardly strained as it is. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=969076 It seems to me that having a good, stable synching ADSL2+ modem is key, yet amazing there's so little info on what the good brands / models are. They seem to like Billion modems / routers at Whirlpool, but we only get the low-end models here in NZ (7100). I imported a 7404VGP which was good until I bricked it with a firmware upgrade last week.

There was probably a lack of responses due to the frequency of these threads.. if the op had of searched he would see countless threads with the information he was requiring. Ive setup a few Belkin wireless N Vision routers lately, which are an all in one that does everything you require. Plus they are VERY nice devices, that tell you all sorts of info via the panel on the front. They will allow wireless N devices to get full speed while also allowing wireless G to access it. You get what you pay for when it comes to these things. Buy a tp link and you will get crap firmware and everything that comes along with that.. Also we have begun selling the 3com 3CRWDR300A-73, very nice routers as well, dont look like much but the firmware is rock solid and stability/performance is awesome too. Have sold over 150 of its wireless G version, the 3CRWDR101A-75. 3com is a brand you can trust, if your after reliabilty / performance i wouldnt look past them.

I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL router (running Tomato firmware) and Linksys AM300 modem setup along these lines here.

I think its better to have a modem/router in one package to save fuss. We use Belkin routers for our installs. They have a very slick interface, provide you with a lot of options and if anything goes wrong with them you can call an 0800 number and Belkin sends you out a new one at no charge! The Belkin N routers have an option of running B/G and N at the same time.

I've just goten a WRT54GS (V2), second-hand, for $90NZD (good ol' trademe). Now awaiting a dynalink RTA1320 to arrive, and will post feedback once it's all up and running (hopefullY!). Assuming all goes as planned, I'll retire the WAG54G2 to backup duties, sell second-hand, or donate to relatives. @geeksonwheels: that may be fine for Mom & Pop's - but where's the geek fun in that approach? :)

Yeah I'd consider getting a Belkin for my grandma :)
