Topic # 84409 30-May-2011 17:24 Send private message

I'm looking at replacing an old PC which acts as a web server in our office with a NAS box.

The NAS would have to run Apache, PHP and MySQL, as well as doing its normal file sharing stuff.

Can anyone recommend a brand and model that I should be looking at?  It would be great if I could do this without voiding the warranty by playing around with the software on the NAS box, but I understand that it might be necessary.

The NAS would only be servicing two or three workstations, no need for access via the Internet.

Although I haven't used them personally I think QNAP make some with Apache/PHP/MySQL installed.

All QNAPs run the same system software, it's just the hardware spec that changes between models. So no matter which model you get, they all work as a LAMP server.

Synology, Qnap, Netgear... pretty much all NAS vendors include this kind of feature in their software these days.

Synology, and Qnap, both have easy install for LAMP.

Synology DS1511+ 5 Bay

QNAP Turbo Nas 559 Pro ii 5 Bay.

Both highly regarded, Qnap have the slight up as will read HFS+ as well from usb drives.( if you have macs)
Qnap and synolgy do lots of sized NAS, an both UI are easy to use.

Thecus, great price and performance, but the UI lets them down even though they have improved it. The 4200 and the 4200 Pro has a built in UPS, wil last for 10 mins if power is cut)

All of them support what you want and have modules that are easy to install, lots have 1 touch copy buttons from usb's and dual lans, in case one fails over or for better throughput.

I would have a look at Amozon.com for synolgy/Qnap pricing, even with import tax beats anyone here. Thecus price is about the same. www.pctronix.co.nz has a great selection and good pricing.

I have just got 2 NAS this week - both QNAP.

One is a TS-559pro and the other TS-659pro+. I have only used the TS-559 so far with 3.4 firmware and I only have positive things to say. WIth the 3.4 firmware I have it running VLANs, iSCSI and a whole lot of other things you wouldn't expect from NAS and its been great so far easily pushing wire speed for iSCSI. They do also seem to support LAMP. However if I were in your situation I may look at a proper server maybe with something like VMware.

I have a spare ML110 G5 looking for a new home if your interested. It has hardware RAID with a practically brand new battery, 8GB ram, quad core CPU etc. and fully ESXi ready. PM if interested.
