We have recently moved into a rental home. We brought with us a Linksys modem/router which promptly overheated and died one day. I had a Thompson TG585 lying around so I set that up. It's not great and so I bought a TP-Link TD-W8960. The TP-Link says that ADSL isn't available on the line - yet it is because I am using the ADSL on the Thompson to write this post. Note that this is the second one of this model that I have had as I swapped the riginal out with the retailer for the same reason. Everything else - wireless, ethernet, etc is working fine. Is there an incompatibility between my phone line and the TP-Link chipset? What can I do?

Just a thought: The TP-Link has an option to specify which pair (inner or outer pair) that DSL is present on, somewhere in the DSL settings i think. If it was set to the wrong pair, then it wouldnt 'see' DSL. Not too sure why the default setting wouldnt work, but might be worth a try. When they can detect DSL, they are awesome routers!

The TP-Link DSL performance is great - they are some of the best performing DSL products available. Does the modem even attempt to train at all? *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

Yes, the ADSL light flashes as it tries to connect.

Is the unit you purchased running the latest firmware? http://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/?model=TD-W8960N&version=V3 Always check.

Have you try the phone cable that comes with the tplink modem router combo? As nickb500 suggested, it might use a different pair of copper wires than the other brands. I think I have a similar problem when I switch my US Robotics router to Linksys

Hi all, I have had this a few times before, you know the settings are correct but it just wont connect. Reboot the modem by removing the power for a few seconds and plug back in, normally once connected they wont drop off. John

I have updated the firmware and tried different cables and filters combinations. I did notice that the original cable (could be from anywhere) has four wires whereas the TP-Link has only the central two. I have also tried both inner and outer pair selection in the modem as suggested by Nickb800. Guessing you have PVC Info setup correctly (VPI.VCI): 0.100. I'd be very interested in the speedtest.net stats of the Thomson compared to the TP-Link. I found my Thomson gave 1Mb more bandwidth than the TD-8840 or TD-8840T

I've tried all of the above and then some. At this point, later today or tomorrow I am going to ring the TP-Link 0800 number and talk to them about it.

Where are you based? Perhaps you might find a geekzoner nearby with dsl that you can check your modem on

Just letting you know I have the exact same problem - My TP link (Exact same model) wont pick up any ADSL connection, Whereas my old dynalink works fine. I upgraded the firmware, worked for about an hour before it went back to the same.

As has been mentioned, double check that it is using PPPoA VC-Mux with vpi/vci 0/100. If it is still failing to establish the dsl link, then force the modem to connect using g.dmt as this might allow it to bring the connection up.

After about 6 hours of using my old modem, decided to try it out again. Has been working fine the last 2 hours, hope it lasts. And yeah I've been using the settings above

Superdan, I am taking heart from your experience! Oldhat, how do I force the modem to use g.dmt? There is a list of protocols in one of the settings - do I untick the rest of them and leave g.dmt ticked? I have plugged the modem back in - reset to factory and double checked all of the settings. It's been half an hour and there is no ADSL signal on the line yet.
