Because I'm not allowed to post in the offers and wanted forum. I am looking for a Buffalo 300Mbps Wireless Router WHR-G300N. Because it sucks living in our tiny country sometimes. And this is one of those times we have all experienced, when we just want to get a product or tool and we can't get it easily. I have seen one on sella.co.nz but the "seller" has a really suspect reputation for advertising products they don't actually have in stock. Sorry I am just having mega wifi dropout router rage right now and I have had enough. What a need is a router that gives a powerful signal and good range. I don't know why companies think that this is not the important element in a router, that it just bloody well works but oh well. If anyone has a Buffalo 300Mbps Wireless Router WHR-G300N or the Buffalo whr-hp-g54 wifi router, or has a lead on how to get one into the country, please let me know. Why the fudge we can't just buy things from Amazon and pay the duties and GST on it is retarded.

You won't find Buffalo or Billion much in NZ, there is no wholesaler bringing them in. However there are plenty equal or better substitutes from TP Link, Asus, Dynalink/Netcomm, Linksys/Cisco, Belkin, Netgear etc that are available here.

I am thinking about taking the risk and buying one on ebay from Hong Kong.

The question is why do you want that specific make model? WHR-300N is: 4MB flash, 32MB ram, 400mhz cpu (Atheros AR7240), 100Mbit switch (not gigabit), not dual band... yesterdays specs these days. It's just standard stuff.

Have you tried selecting a different WiFi channel? Or perhaps looking at Meraki Access Points (which are now distributed in New Zealand by SnapperNet)? Good question - I only want it for distributing a DSL connection with stability and strength. That is the only requirement I have. I don't have a network per se, I only have one proper workstation, the rest are just family's crap laptops and iphones etc. And also for budgetary reasons, too. I would be interested in a ASUS NT-66U if we had them in our country and I could afford it.

See https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en (or some router firmware (e.g. tomatRAF) have this function built in)

Given that one of those Meraki APs costs about 3x or 4x the cost of the router it's not appropriate nor necessary. I am only looking for a signal to travel 20-30m, but I want it to be strong and stable.

I am also using dd-wrt also. There may be signal interference from other sources but I have turned off wireless phones etc. I am certain it is the obvious answer that the router sucks. I would just replace the aerials but they are not replaceable on my asus rt-n10+ To head the next question off at the pass, yes I have tried connecting to the router directly via ethernet and as expected it works perfectly every time. Also the problem is not with the dsl connection coming into the router, it's purely with the wifi emission from the router.

I have a Buffalo WHR-G301N and the firmware with it is terrible terrible terrible. I've replaced it with DD-WRT and it has become a pretty good router - but nothing particularly special. There are plenty of routers available in NZ that would be just as good or better.

I guess you've tried a 5GHz network as well or its too far away/too many walls? I wasn't happy with my wifi performance either.. in the end I decided wireless was never going to be as good as wired in terms of latency and reliability, so I had a couple of cat5e cables installed. Pretty happy with the result (but then I own the house so its a bit of a longer term thing)

Unfortunately because my router is so low-rent I might as well first begin by replacing the router with one I actually want, then later on if I move I could buy an AP as needed.

My computer lives in a separate 'granny flat' from where the phone line comes into the house and where the router lives so I can't do cabling :(

Been doing research and the 300N seems to be the best bet for the budget. It's not that I am not a cheap bastard, I am happy to pay for things but I think I will move within a year and I will stick with a LAN connection only so it seems like a waste of money. If someone has some opinions of routers with the strongest signal strength then I am happy to hear suggestions.

Looking through that list a bit better I can see two ubiquiti products that might do the job, in particular the Ubiquiti PowerAP N indoor AP/router. So I don't end up just buying an AP, it can replace the router I have too. There are lots of advantages to buying new and having something covered by warranty. I am going to think really seriously about this one and will ring GoWifi tomorrow. Thanks heaps for the bit of guidance, this has been very helpful.
